Nissan Fairlady Z currently represents a line of sports cars consisting of 2-door coupé fastback and roadster. Since its introduction in 1969, the model has been offered exclusively in the domestic Japanese market.

Creation History

In the 1960s, Nissan was a relatively small-scale production company, but it had big ambitions. One of the decisions that made it possible to implement them was the creation of a sports car that was supposed to improve the brand's image, primarily among North American buyers. Initially, Yamaha was involved as a partner, which was responsible for designing the new model. However, the first results did not impress Nissan's management, mainly due to the 2-liter DOHC engine, as a result of which the project was closed. Subsequently, Yamaha built a running prototype and sold this development to Toyota, as a result of which the legendary 2000GT appeared on the market. Nissan preferred to create a sports car on its own using components from mass models, which largely predetermined the commercial success of the "fire lady", which was distinguished by a combination of stylish appearance, excellent handling, and low cost.

Initial Version

The first production samples of the car were sold in the fall of 1969. The Fairlady Z model represented a special version of the coupé, designed exclusively for the domestic Japanese market. This approach to forming the lineup continued throughout the entire serial production of this model. The car differed from other modifications, mainly by the power unit. In this capacity, a 2-liter inline "six" was used, developing 130 horsepower. The engine was distinguished by a layout with 4 valves, 3 carburetors, and 2 camshafts.

Current Version

In late 2008, the serial production of the sixth-generation car began. Unlike the coupés and roadsters of other generations, the model had an extremely weak technical connection with its predecessor. The car became shorter, wider, and lower, and the more extensive use of aluminum, high-strength steel, and composites made it possible to significantly reduce weight. The modified "cage" body design ensured a significant increase in torsional and bending stiffness. The front suspension featured double transverse forged links, which, like the steering knuckles, were made of "winged" metal, as were all the components of the chassis in the rear of the car. The engine range consisted of various versions of the V-shaped gasoline "six", with a volume of 3.6 liters with the index VQ37VHR, which developed from 336 to 355 horsepower. The power unit, depending on the version, worked in a "pair" with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a 7-range "automatic". The car of this generation became the most popular in our country.
