The Nissan Pathfinder is a line of mid-size SUVs. It has been in production since 1986. Until the fourth-generation model was introduced in 2012, the vehicle shared a platform with the Navara pickup truck and had an identical front-end design. After 2012, the manufacturer opted to move away from the previous ladder-frame concept, instead using a traditional unibody design for crossovers.YD21/WD21 Model
The premiere of this model took place in May 1986. It was a 2-door SUV built on a ladder frame, sharing a platform and most components with the Hardbody pickup truck. A unique feature of the vehicle at that time was the optional electronically controlled transmission, which allowed for on-the-fly switching between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. The base versions of the SUV were rear-wheel drive, while the mid-range version had a part-time four-wheel-drive system with manual control. The base engine was an inline-four 2.4-liter unit, and later a 2.7-liter diesel engine was added to the lineup, with some versions featuring a turbocharger.Another important feature of the SUV was its rear suspension. Despite using the pickup truck's platform, it was borrowed from the larger Safari, which later became known as the Patrol. As a result, this model had a 5-link suspension with coil springs and shock absorbers at the rear. In 1987, the SUV received a more powerful V6 engine producing 140 horsepower. Two years later, a 4-door version was introduced, which had an identical frame and wheelbase to the original. By 1990, it remained the only available version, as the 2-door modification was discontinued.
R50 Model
In late 1995, the brand introduced the second-generation SUV. The vehicle underwent a complete redesign while retaining the concept of its predecessor. The engine lineup included an improved V6 producing 168 horsepower instead of 140. As part of the 2000 facelift, it was replaced by a new V6 with 240 horsepower. At the same time, inline-four engines were discontinued.R51 Model
The third-generation SUV was released in 2004. It used the new F-Alpha platform at that time. The engine lineup was expanded to include a 4.0-liter V6 producing 266 horsepower and a 2.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine producing 171 horsepower. In 2008, the model underwent a minor facelift with minor exterior changes. The version for the North American market received a 5.6-liter V8 engine from the full-size Titan pickup truck, producing 310 horsepower. In 2010, updated SUVs were introduced for the European, Asian, and South American markets, featuring a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel engine producing 230 horsepower and a revised 2.5-liter engine producing 190 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque, which reduced fuel consumption by 1.4 liters.R52 Model
The fourth-generation SUV, introduced in the second half of 2012, significantly differed from its predecessor. It no longer used a ladder frame, instead featuring a unibody design and a platform shared with Nissan's mid-size cars and crossovers, primarily the Infiniti QX60, which also shared its interior. At the start of sales, the SUV was offered with a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 260 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission from Jatco. This made it significantly more fuel-efficient than its predecessor due to improved aerodynamics and reduced weight. Later, the brand added a more fuel-efficient 2.5-liter turbo diesel engine to the lineup. Another key difference was the appearance of traditional door handles on the rear doors, which had been integrated into the rear pillars since the first generation. In 2014, a hybrid version was introduced, combining a 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine with a 20-horsepower electric motor. As part of the 2017 facelift, the vehicle underwent minor exterior changes, including the addition of standard LED headlights. The engine lineup also included a new V6 with direct injection, producing 284 horsepower, which replaced the previous V6.R53 Model
In winter 2021, the manufacturer introduced the fifth-generation model. The vehicle is a deeply updated version of its predecessor, retaining most of the design features while significantly updating the exterior and interior to resemble other mid-size SUVs from the brand. A notable innovation was the replacement of the Jatco continuously variable transmission with a new 9-speed automatic transmission from ZF. Additionally, the list of equipment includes a large number of electronic "assistants," primarily a terrain monitoring system with 7 modes for controlling the steering, engine, braking system, and transmission. Despite its crossover nature, the vehicle still has high off-road capability, providing additional options for choosing tires and wheels.
