I'm choosing winter tires with studs for the second time. Since my car (BMW F30) doesn't have a spare tire, I'm limited to RunFlat tires. I chose the Continental ContiVikingContact 7 SSR (225/50 R17). After installation, my overall impression is positive. The car handles confidently on snowy slush and slightly icy wet asphalt. When choosing, I compared it to the Pirelli Ice Zero FR (RunFlat), which was on another car, and it performed very well for 2 seasons. I expected no less from Continental. There are many reviews on different resources about these tires, including from real owners.
After 4 months of use, I note the following points:
The tire's rubber compound - temperatures below -10-15 degrees Celsius, it reveals its full potential, and I feel the grip.
In sticky snowy slush (when snow is mixed with water, temperatures around zero) - it gets overwhelmed, ABS kicks in quite often, but at slow speeds, mostly in courtyards where you're driving 15-20 km/h, and if someone steps in front of the car, you'll roll a meter or two on ABS. If you're driving on a city road, I've noticed this happening twice.
On the highway: bare ice on a windy section of the road - it drives confidently up to 80-90 km/h without fanaticism. Faster than that without studs - I consider it an unjustified risk. Snowy moguls between lanes on the highway during a snowstorm - it crosses them confidently, as long as you don't make sharp turns with the steering wheel (but that's also risky with studded tires).
Snow-covered, rolled roads without salt in the area - it drives clearly, 80-90 km/h on forest roads, in turns it slips, but predictably. Studded tires win in this case, but not by much.
With the arrival of warmth (up to +5-10 during the day), you can feel the softness of the rubber, it floats during maneuvers in the city (but it's already time to prepare for summer tires).
Noise - the tire is quite quiet, before buying it I drove on studded GoodYear tires for a couple of weeks - on studs, it was uncomfortable to drive over 100 km/h on the highway, Continental is noticeably quieter (of course, I compared studs to non-studs). The tire is also quieter than the summer directional Pirelli P7 RFT on 18-inch disks.
In general, it's a good non-studded tire, compared to the Pirelli Ice Zero FR - it has a smaller tread pattern and gets overwhelmed faster. On the road, it behaves perfectly, just use your head and remember that winter maneuvers are different from summer ones.
