Mitsubishi Town Box — a classic Japanese transport solution, presented in two key formats: a compact kei car and its expanded version Town Box Wide (microvan). Developed exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, these vehicles have become the standard for practicality, efficiency, and utilitarian design within the strict regulations of the Japanese "kei" class.Generation 1
April 1999 marked the release of a unique vehicle in its segment on the Japanese market — the first generation. Departing from the purely commercial concept of the Bravo series models, engineers created a minivan focused primarily on passenger comfort.
The model was offered in a rear-wheel drive configuration with a central engine location under the front seats, allowing for a short hood and maximizing the useful space in the cabin. Optionally, for all versions, four-wheel drive (4WD) was available. Unlike utilitarian analogs, the emphasis was on convenience. The rear row initially featured two individual seats, rather than a solid bench. Unconventional parking brake lever: An original but unsuccessful solution was the placement of the manual brake lever outside the cabin, next to the driver's door.
The initial range included three versions: SX, LX, and the sporty RX with turbocharging. All of them were offered with a choice of drive (RWD/4WD) and transmission: a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual. The base versions SX/LX were equipped with a naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine 3G83 (659 cm³). Output: 48 hp (35 kW) at 6000 rpm, torque 62 Nm at 4000 rpm. The sporty RX version received a powerful inline four-cylinder turbo engine 4A30 (also 659 cm³) with an intercooler and two camshafts (DOHC). Its power was 64 hp (47 kW) with a torque of 98 Nm.
Next Generation
As part of a strategic partnership with Suzuki, in February 2014, Mitsubishi implemented a large-scale rebranding, releasing key commercial models under its own name on the Japanese market. This step allowed the company to quickly and effectively update the line of small commercial vehicles, offering proven market products. The passenger version of the van — Suzuki Every Wagon, distinguished by a more comfortable cabin and thoughtful trim, was integrated into the Mitsubishi range under the historic name Town Box (chassis DS64W). Since this was a temporary solution against the backdrop of the soon-to-be-completed model cycle at Suzuki, visual changes were limited to minimal emblem replacement.
In March 2015, the partnership moved to a new level with the release of a fully updated generation, built on Suzuki's new platform. The new Town Box received significant technical and spatial improvements. The increased base directly transformed into an increase in cabin space, enhancing passenger comfort and practicality. The model's "heart" became a new three-cylinder turbo engine (658 cm³) with an intercooler. This engine met the strictest environmental standards, offering improved fuel economy and dynamics compared to its predecessor.
