First Generation

The history of the model began in 1990, when the Revue model appeared in the production range of the Japanese brand. After a deep modernization six years later, it turned from a compact sedan into a high-roofed wagon, close in concept to classic minivans of the B segment, thus pre-empting the appearance of the Opel Meriva, Fiat Idea, and Renault Modus. At the same time, the creation of the car fell during the period of Mazda's cooperation with Ford, which led to the use of the American DW platform and a number of technical components, which it shared with the compact Ford Festiva.

Second Generation

The second-generation car appeared in 2002. Thanks to the popularity of its predecessor, the Japanese brand continued to use Demio for the "domestic" market, but even technically, it was a different car. It was created on the B3 platform from Ford, sharing it and the suspension with the 5th generation Fiesta. The key difference, both from the "global" version, which received the name Mazda 2, and the American compact, was the hybrid all-wheel-drive system e-4WD, in which traction to the rear axle was supplied by an electric motor. It was not used to save fuel, but to improve traction when the front wheels started to slip.

Third Generation

The compact car of the next generation was launched in 2007. Here, too, a platform from Ford was used, but in a more modern version, which was used in the 6th generation Fiesta. Under the hood of most versions were petrol engines with a volume of 1.3 and 1.5 liters, which, in addition to a 5-speed "mechanics", were combined with a variator, a unique option available only for cars for the internal market.

Fourth Generation

The hatchback, presented in the summer of 2014, was a completely independent development, using its own platform. The body design was made in the corporate Kodo style, and the technical components were taken from other models of the brand, primarily from the CX-5 crossover, from which it inherited the chassis layout, transmission, and engines created using Skyactiv technology. The concept of the car has changed, the operational properties of which were noticeably "shifted" towards traction and handling. It was for this reason that the hatchback stood out with an extended track of the front and rear axles, increased wheel arches, and length, which, in particular, reduced the space available to passengers in the second row. As part of the changed concept, the car received an update in 2016 in the form of the appearance of the "proprietary" G-Vectoring Control system, which made it easier to control thanks to smoother and more predictable reactions to the driver's actions. The difference from the "global" version was also the motor range, which consisted of two engines. The "base" petrol engine with a volume of 1.3 liters and a power of 93 hp, and for a surcharge, a 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine with 105 hp was offered.
