The engine range consisted of in-line gasoline "fours" with a volume of 1.6 to 2 liters, which, depending on the configuration, were combined with 4- and 5-speed manual transmissions or a 3-range "automatic".

GC Model

In the fall of 1982, the manufacturer introduced a car of the next generation. This time, a different platform was used - GC, thanks to which the model received front-wheel drive. The car turned out to be a landmark for the entire Japanese brand, as it was extremely warmly received in the European market, where during the first year of mass production, it became the owner of a number of loud titles. This is why a 5-door hatchback was added to the sedan and coupe. In technical terms, in addition to front-wheel drive, the car was distinguished by an independent rear suspension, which significantly improved handling. Another important advantage was the engines. The basis of the engine range was still in-line "fours", which were characterized by a "fun" character, reliability, and fuel efficiency. Later, modifications with a turbocharged 2-liter engine, developing 145 horsepower, became available, as well as with a 2-liter diesel power unit. It was developed on the basis of a gasoline engine, differing from it with an aluminum cylinder head. The engine turned out to be extremely successful and was used by Mazda until the mid-2000s.

GD/GV/GE Model

In the spring of 1987, the brand introduced the next generation of this model. This was an evolutionary development of the predecessor, despite the use of a different platform. The concept remained the same - a versatile, well-equipped family car with sporty handling. That's why the engine range, although composed of new engines, was all characterized by a higher torque in the low and medium speed range. The 2-liter diesel engine was especially notable in this regard, which received a rotor-type supercharger, thanks to which the power unit was distinguished by an almost instantaneous "pickup" when starting from a place.

In November 1991, the car underwent a large-scale modernization, which mainly affected the exterior, characterized by rounded edges and an even more sloping hood edge and an aggressive windshield slope. The engine range underwent significant changes, mainly related to the brand's desire to penetrate the segment of representative-class cars. It included several gasoline V6 engines with a volume of 2 to 2.5 liters, which, like other modifications, were combined with a 5-speed "mechanics" in the standard configuration, and with a 4-range automatic transmission in more expensive versions. Another innovation was the absence of modifications with a station wagon body in the lineup.

GF Model

In 1997, the brand introduced an updated model. The lineup of modifications included a station wagon again, but it used a modified platform that increased its wheelbase. The body, although it did not have a single common part with its predecessor, retained a stylistic resemblance to it. The engine range remained almost unchanged, based on in-line gasoline "fours" with a volume of 1.8, 2, and 2.5 liters, diesel RF, with a volume of 2 liters. But, at the same time, of all the V6, only one remained - with the KL-ZE index. In 2002, the car was discontinued, and its successor became the Mazda 6.
