Mazda Roadster is a compact sports car designed for two passengers. This model has been present in the production range of the Japanese brand since 1998, when its second generation debuted, which was previously sold in Japan under the Eunos brand, starting from 1989.

Model NB

The roadster presented in 1998 retained the conceptual features of the previous model - low weight and dimensions in combination with a front-mounted power unit and rear-wheel drive. The most significant changes were in the exterior design, which lost the pop-up headlights, which was due to the need to ensure pedestrian safety. The car became slightly wider, with deflectors behind the seats to reduce air turbulence. In technical terms, the innovations were limited to the modernization of the brake mechanisms, the use of tires with a wider tread, as well as the presence of a refined 1.8-liter engine under the hood. It received dome-shaped pistons, which increased the compression ratio, as well as other improvements that allowed the power to be increased to 140 horsepower, shifting the "torque shelf" closer to low revs.

Model NC

In 2005, the next-generation car debuted. It differed from its predecessor in a completely revised exterior design, as well as technical unification with the RX-8 sports coupe, primarily in terms of chassis components. Under the hood was a 2-liter "atmospheric" gasoline engine, producing 170 horsepower and working in pair with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. A year later, a version with a folding hardtop appeared, developed in conjunction with Webasto, which rose and fell in just 12 seconds, adding only 36 kg to the weight of the roadster.

Model ND

The car with the ND index was presented in 2014. In addition to the newly changed exterior design, executed in the current corporate style, the roadster stood out with a weight reduced by 100 kg, which positively affected the dynamic characteristics and handling. Another important innovation was the appearance of new gasoline engines and Skyactiv transmissions, as well as an electromechanical power steering amplifier. The equipment with the roadster was "shared" with the Mazda 3 sedan, which debuted a few months earlier.

In 2018, the car was waiting for a significant update, affecting, first of all, the technical part. The roadster received modified engines with a volume of 1.5 and 2 liters, which became significantly more powerful, while becoming compliant with current environmental standards. In versions with an "automatic", the gear ratio of the main pair and the wheel offset increased. A rearview camera, traffic sign recognition system, and automatic braking system, capable of fully stopping the car when moving in both directions, were included in the standard equipment of 2-liter modifications.
