The South Korean conglomerate Kia, which is now known worldwide, began its activity as a small company called KyungSung Precision Industry. This happened in 1944. Initially, its field of activity was the production of bicycle parts, as well as bicycles themselves. The fact is that there were no similar productions in the country, and bicycle equipment was purchased abroad. And in conditions of poverty of the population, two-wheeled transport was the only one that most people could afford. It was the low purchasing power that slowed down the growth of the enterprise, which was able to develop significantly only by 1952. It was also during this period that the name was changed to KIA Industrial Company.

Intensive Development

Starting from 1952, the company's affairs went rapidly uphill. The popularity of bicycles increased so much that it was necessary to open new production facilities in 1955. A few years later, the management decided to produce motorcycles. And in 1961, the first motorized vehicle in Korea was produced - the S100 motorcycle.

The next stage was the production of small trucks, which were equipped with only three wheels. And in the early 70s, the legendary Titan Boxer truck model appeared, which was produced in huge quantities not only throughout the country but also far beyond its borders. During this period, the Koreans began to cooperate with the Japanese Mazda. Therefore, many technologies in their cars were borrowed from the Japanese automotive industry.

1972 was a key year for the company. During this period, a license was obtained for the production of passenger cars. Also during this period, Kia engineers developed the first Korean engine, which ran on gasoline. And two years later, the first passenger car, Brisa, was produced. The model was quite successful, so it was exported. Its basis was still Japanese technology.

Against the background of successful development, the company became the owner of another local production, Asia Motors, in 1976. The latter specialized in the production of cargo transport, as well as special-purpose vehicles for military needs.

In 1978, an agreement was signed with Peugeot and Fiat to assemble some of their models for the domestic market. This significantly strengthened the company's position. Further development is associated with numerous contracts with global manufacturers. One of them was cooperation with Ford, which became the owner of 10% of the shares. It was during this period that the famous small car Pride was released, the basis for which was the Mazda 121. Notably, in some countries, it is still produced today with minor changes.

Further development was associated with the expansion of the model range produced. As a result, the company firmly took its place among the three Korean leaders in car production. But in 1997, when the crisis began, its position was significantly shaken, and if not for the help from Hyundai, perhaps the South Korean giant would no longer exist today.

Now the concern is firmly on its feet, supplying its products to more than 170 countries around the world.
