Kia Optima is a mid-size passenger car belonging to the D segment. It has been produced since 2000 and is a "global" model of the South Korean brand, available all over the world under different names. The name was first used in 2008 for the updated second-generation Magentis sedan, which was offered in the US as the Optima. After the release of the fifth-generation car in 2019, the brand preferred to bring the name to a single standard, after which this model was offered exclusively as the Kia K5.

The Optima was first introduced in the US in 2008, at that time being a special version of the second-generation mid-size Magentis sedan, which was released in 2005. The car differed significantly from the "original" in terms of the design of the front and rear lights, as well as increased dimensions. It was 70 mm longer. Another fundamental difference was the engine range, consisting of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder Theta II gasoline engine and a 2.7-liter V6 engine. Both power units provided the car with similar dynamic qualities, accelerating it to "hundred" in just under 10 seconds.

TF Body

In 2010, also in the US, a car of the next generation was introduced. For the first time, the Optima name was used for all markets where Kia was present, except for South Korea, where this model was still available as the K5. Compared to its predecessor, the sedan differed in design, brought in line with the corporate style of the time with the so-called "tiger's mouth" on the radiator grille. Like the related Hyundai Sonata, the car was available with two 2-liter and 2.4-liter gasoline "four", which were combined with a "basic" 6-speed "mechanics" or an optional 6-speed "automatic". In 2013, the brand added to the lineup modifications with a turbocharged 2-liter engine producing 274 horsepower, as well as a "hybrid" version, in which a 2.4-liter gasoline engine worked in conjunction with a 30 kW electric motor. At that time, this was the only car in the D segment that could accelerate to 100 km/h using electric traction.

JF Body

In late 2015, the brand introduced the next iteration of this model. As before, the car shared a platform with the Hyundai Optima, differing from its predecessor in a significantly updated design, minor changes in mechanical components, and expanded equipment in all trim levels. The following year, in 2016, the brand introduced a version with a station wagon body, developed by Kia's European division. In the same year, in the US, the release of the "hybrid" PHEV modification took place, with a 2-liter inline-four Nu gasoline engine, a 50 kW electric motor, and a 9.8 kWh battery pack, providing a range of up to 43 km. A distinctive feature of this version was a drag coefficient of 0.24, which is also characteristic of the Tesla Model S. To improve aerodynamics, the car uses an automatically opening and closing radiator grille. In 2019, the brand introduced a model of the next generation, but already as the K5.
