The Suzuki Escudo has been in production since 1988. The vehicle is a compact SUV, better known as the Vitara. The Escudo name was used for vehicles for the domestic Japanese market, borrowed from the currency unit of Portugal.

The 3-door version was positioned as a mini-SUV, and the 5-door version as a compact SUV. Accordingly, both versions were equipped with engines, the 1.6-liter engine was given to the three-door version, and a 2-liter power unit was available for the 5-door version.

Third Generation

In 2005, the third-generation vehicle was released. Unlike its predecessors, this was a truly new model that received significant technical changes. First of all, due to the frame, which was integrated into the power body, which increased its rigidity and increased the ground clearance, and also allowed the floor to be lowered, increasing the space in the cabin and its reserve above the heads of passengers. In the rear suspension, instead of a solid axle, an independent "multi-link" was used. In the engine range, which was composed of power units from previous models, a 1.9-liter diesel engine from Renault with a power of 127 horsepower appeared. Most of the cars were equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-range "automatic". The exception was the version with a gasoline V6, which, alone in the line, received a 5-speed automatic transmission. A feature was the settings of the all-wheel drive system, which constantly supplied torque to both axles in a ratio of 47/53 in favor of the rear. The 5-door versions had a lockable central differential and a reduced range in the gearbox.

Fourth Generation

The fourth-generation SUV was presented in the spring of 2015. The key difference from its predecessors was the transition from a frame to a bearing body, due to the use of the SX4 crossover platform. Similarly, the layout of the engine compartment changed, where the power unit was located not longitudinally, but transversely. The vehicle's dimensions decreased significantly, in all directions. Under the hood were 1.6-liter gasoline or diesel engines, which could be combined with a 5-speed "mechanics" or a 6-speed "automatic".

In 2022, the vehicle became a hybrid as part of a large-scale update. Under the hood was a "naturally aspirated" 1.5-liter engine, producing 101 horsepower and 132 Nm, which was supplemented by an electric motor with an output of 33 horsepower and 60 Nm, installed on the output shaft of the transmission. The operation scheme implied its use to compensate for torque dips during gear shifts of the 6-speed robotic gearbox. It is this that explains the extremely small capacity of the traction battery installed under the floor of the luggage compartment - only 0.84 kWh. Another important difference of this version was the expanded equipment, which included LED headlights, adaptive "cruise" with road sign recognition function.
