The Suzuki Cultus was produced from 1983 to 2016 and was conceived as a small city "mini" that doesn't try to appear bigger than it is, but at the same time surprises with engineering solutions that run through all its generations. The name "Cultus" comes from the Latin word cultus, meaning "care", "care" or "culture of everyday life", and in the context of the model, it sounds very recognizable: the car was created precisely as a caring urban assistant, maximally adapted to dense streets, short trips, frequent stops, and the general idea of convenience without excess.First Generation
Launched in 1983, the car looked like a response to the demand for a light, economical city model. The design was maximally pragmatic: a steel-bearing body with simple but neatly executed welding points, a suspension in the form of a McPherson strut in the front and a beam in the rear. Like other Japanese brands of that time, Suzuki resorted to maximum weight reduction of the car, making, for example, many panels thinner than usual. This approach allowed, in particular, to strengthen the suspension mounting points, which had a positive impact on handling, especially on poor roads.
The engine range consisted of engines with a volume of 1 to 1.3 liters, both with carburetor and electronic fuel injection systems. But even the simplest versions used improved cooling systems and lightweight pistons with graphite-coated skirts to reduce friction. The gearboxes were 4- or 5-speed manual, and some models came with a 3-speed automatic.
The interior in its early version is a dense vinyl, rough plastic, and a minimum of frills. However, the seating is comfortable, and the ergonomics are well thought out: even the base trim levels had an adjustable steering wheel, rear window defroster, and energy-intensive fabric seats.
Second Generation
From the beginning of 1988, the car became noticeably larger, following the tightened requirements for passive safety. The body was strengthened: the front struts received additional ribs, and the rear part was changed to reduce vibrations from the beam. The five-door and three-door versions had different suspension settings: the five-door had more rigid elastic elements to neutralize the rocking of the heavier rear part of the car. Engines of the G-series with chain drive of the timing mechanism, an improved combustion chamber shape, and more dense cooling channels appeared. Later engines of the GTi version already had a 16-valve head and increased block rigidity.
The interior became noticeably more pleasant. The plastic is softer, the fabrics are denser, and the seats have better-expressed lateral support. Separate trim levels offered electric windows, air conditioning, an improved audio system, and even leather inserts on the doors.
Third Generation
Starting from 1998, the model was actively sold on the markets of many countries, but the overall concept remained the same: lightness, economy, and a sufficiently modern design. The body became more rigid due to the use of high-strength steels in the sills and reinforcement of the front module. The suspension was tuned softer than in previous versions, the beam mounting points were redesigned, which reduced the noise from the rear part. The engines received an updated injection system, more accurate injectors, and an electronic throttle on some modifications. The "automatic" became 4-speed with adaptive logic, and the mechanics received an improved synchronizer of the second gear - one of the weaknesses of the previous generations.
The interior can already be called modern: soft plastic on the dashboard, pleasant fabrics, larger head restraints, and normal multimedia with support for external devices. In rich versions, there was a climate control system, painted decorative inserts, a leather steering wheel trim, and airbags. The wheels are from 13 to 15 inches in diameter, often with light alloy wheels with a simple but neat milling.
