The Suzuki Alto has been in production since 1979 and has become an iconic model for the Japanese brand. Initially, the car was one of the modifications of the commercial Fronte, but by 1988, the compact city car was separated into a separate model.

Second Generation

The car of the next generation appeared in 1984. Unlike its predecessor, it was created on a "passenger" platform Cultus, which provided access to a much more extensive set of technical components, first of all, to engines - this was a modern 3-cylinder engine with a volume of 550 "cubes", available, including with a turbocharger. Due to this, the power unit for the first time in the history of the model "reached" the regulatory limitations of Japanese internal legislation, developing a maximum of 64 horsepower. The initial version of this car was a 3-door hatchback, but a year later, 5-door versions appeared in the lineup, which made it even more popular.

Fifth Generation

The car of the fifth generation was presented in 1998. Compared to its predecessor, it stood out for its more aerodynamic body shapes, and the salon, in turn, was borrowed from the previously debuted Kei. As before, the Japanese brand sought to minimize the cost of the car, which made it lighter than the previous model, and the versions with front and all-wheel drive had minimal differences in the lower part of the body. For the first few years of series production, a petrol 3-cylinder engine with a volume of 660 "cubes" was installed under the hood, both in the "atmospheric" and turbocharged version. However, after a few years, the most powerful version was discontinued, and the "atmospheric" version of the power unit was modernized, being adapted to work on a lean fuel-air mixture.

Sixth Generation

The debut of the sixth-generation car took place in September 2004. To a large extent, the car's design was inspired by the Citroen C2, especially in the front part, with a characteristic bend of the hood and headlights. As before, the model was positioned in the most accessible price segment, having lost, in particular, the most powerful turbocharged engines.

Seventh Generation

The car of the seventh generation appeared in 2009. It was available in two versions - for the domestic Japanese market and for other countries. The version for Japan represented a classic "kei-car", being limited by the legislation of this country. Under the hood of this version was a 660-cubic 3-cylinder engine, which was combined with a 5-speed "mechanics", 4-range "automatic", or a variator, depending on the configuration and type of drive installed. In 2011, the list of equipment was supplemented with a "start-stop" system from Wagon R, and two years later, it also received the Ene-Charge system from it, which allowed further reducing fuel consumption. The "global" version was produced in India, and it was a different car, technically unrelated to the model for the Japanese market, and also having a different body design. Under the hood was a row of petrol "triplets" with a volume of 1 liter, developed specifically for this model.

Eighth Generation

In late 2014, the premiere of the eighth-generation car took place. It debuted with a modular HEARTECT platform, along with a rear torsion suspension in monodrive versions. The new components and optimized body structure made it possible to lighten the compact model by 60 kg at once, which had a positive effect on fuel efficiency. In addition to this, the engine - a row of 660-cubic triples from the previous model - made its contribution to fuel economy, having undergone another cycle of modernization. It was distinguished by an increased compression ratio and the presence of a system for recirculating exhaust gases, a changed geometry of the intake and exhaust manifolds, which also made it possible to increase traction at low and medium speeds. Depending on the configuration, the power unit was combined with a 5-speed manual or automated transmission with a single clutch. Both transmissions were available with a system of full drive.

Ninth Generation

In late 2021, the ninth-generation car was released on the Japanese market. Compared to its predecessor, the car stood out for its more modern features, having lost the stylistic characteristics of models characteristic of compact Suzuki cars since the 1970s. The windshield was installed almost vertically. The body height increased to 1525 mm, along with the headroom and door openings for passengers. The salon retained a 4-seat layout and fairly ascetic equipment. In particular, head restraints at the rear sofa with a solid back are available only in the most expensive versions of the configuration, along with climate control and LED headlights. However, already in the "base" version, an automatic braking system is offered, which uses two cameras under the windshield to work.

Under the hood was a 3-cylinder 660-cubic engine from the predecessor, developing 46 horsepower and 55 Nm. In more expensive versions, a more technologically advanced version of this engine is used with a variable valve timing system VVT and a hybrid "add-on" in the form of a starter-generator, which adds 2.6 horsepower and 40 Nm in the first seconds of acceleration, and also increases the operating time of the "start-stop" system. The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3 Ah, powering it, is located under the front passenger seat. Both power units are combined with a variator, front or all-wheel drive.
