The minivan "Lada Nadezhda" appeared in the production range of the Russian brand in 1998, becoming its debut model in this segment. It was created as a practical family car with increased capacity. At the same time, it inherited a number of technical solutions from the off-road platform of the "Niva" family. It was this combination - a minivan body and a full-fledged four-wheel drive transmission - that favorably distinguished the car from the overwhelming majority of its "classmates".

The project was developed by relatively small forces and largely relied on already existing components. This approach allowed to speed up the release of the model to the market, but at the same time formed its specific character: in terms of layout, it was a compact minivan, and in terms of "mechanics" - a close relative of the classic VAZ off-road vehicles.

Body architecture and salon layout

The car received a classic for minivans of that time 5-door monovolume body with a high roof and a short hood. Unlike most models of the plant of that period, a layout with a pronounced passenger space and a transformable salon was used here. Depending on the version, it could have six or seven seats. The second and third rows of seats were folding or removable, which made it possible to significantly increase the volume of the luggage compartment. The driver's seat was distinguished by a high line of sight, and the large glazing provided good visibility. Despite the utilitarian interior, the layout of the controls was familiar to VAZ owners, which made it easier to get used to.

Technical features

One of the most unusual features was the transmission. Unlike most compact minivans of that time, the car received a permanent four-wheel drive with an interaxle differential and the possibility of its blocking. This solution was directly inherited from the off-road vehicles of the Niva family. The design used a distribution box with a reduction gear, which significantly increased the cross-country ability. Such a scheme looked almost unique here. The main competitors - such as Renault Espace or Volkswagen Sharan - offered, predominantly, front-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive versions were extremely rare and much more expensive.

The engine range was formed from already known VAZ units. The most common was the 1.7-liter petrol engine of the VAZ-21213 family. Later, a version with a 1.8-liter engine appeared, which provided more confident traction when the car was fully loaded. The engines were combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox, also borrowed from the off-road family. Thanks to this, the car retained the characteristic traction of the "Niva" at low speeds, which was especially useful when operating on poor roads or when transporting cargo. The suspension also largely repeated the design of the compact off-road vehicle: independent front and dependent rear on longitudinal links.

Equipment and operation features

By the standards of its time, the model offered a fairly practical set of equipment. Depending on the configuration, the buyer could count on a hydraulic power steering, a more powerful heater, an adjustable steering column, an additional row of seats, improved sound insulation of the salon. The main emphasis was not on the richness of the equipment, but on functionality. The car was often used as a family vehicle, a service car or a compact commercial van.

Here, 15- and 16-inch wheels are used with 195/70 R15, 205/70 R15 or 185/75 R16 tires. This format provides a sufficient ground clearance and stability on uneven surfaces.
