The appearance of this car was largely due to the need to load the production capacity of the Pininfarina assembly plant, which was idle after the release of the Cadillac Allante convertible was stopped in 1990. Of the two options offered to the management of the Italian concern, the choice was made in favor of the "Style Center" project by Fiat itself. The car was created on the platform of the compact Tipo, in a modified version that allowed the use of independent suspension on both axles. At the front, classic "MacPherson" struts were combined with longitudinal links at the rear. Another important feature was the engine range. Initially, it consisted of two petrol engines taken from the Lancia Delta Integrale, a legend of the world rally championships. In essence, this was one power unit with a volume of 2 liters, available in "atmospheric" and turbocharged versions, developing 139 and 190 horsepower, respectively. In 1996, the engine range was supplemented with 1.8- and 2-liter engines. The latter was an in-line "five" that was also available in "atmospheric" and turbocharged versions, producing 147 and 220 horsepower. All turbocharged versions also differed in the presence of a high-friction Viscodrive differential on the front axle, which allowed to neutralize the insufficient maneuverability of a powerful car with front-wheel drive.
