The Beginning of the Story

The company's first full-fledged car was the "Model A", which was quite successful and contributed to the development of a small production into a full-fledged automaker. During the same period, in 1899, the company "Renault Brothers" was officially registered. And from 1900, the production of massive cars began, with the AG1 being the first model. Successful sales contributed to the expansion of the dealer network, which after four years already had 120 representatives throughout France. Then, in 1905, a large order from the Paris authorities for 250 cars followed, which were used as taxis. This further strengthened the brothers' position, bringing the company to a new level.

During World War I, the automaker reprofiled its facilities to produce small tanks and aircraft engines.

World War II ended badly for Louis Renault. He was accused of collaborating with the Nazis and arrested. As a result, his health failed, and he died in prison. The government of the country took advantage of this, nationalizing the production. During this period, the company focused on producing inexpensive compact cars, reaching sixth place in the world sales ranking by the end of the 1950s.

Presence in the US Market

In order to expand the sales sphere, the company acquired a stake in American Motors, which allowed it to freely enter the US market. However, the expected effect was not achieved. The desired level of sales did not occur. This negatively affected the manufacturer's rating, including from the French citizens. As a result, the controlling stake was sold, and about 30,000 workers were laid off.

The 1990s

Later, to preserve the automaker's position, the state made it a joint-stock company, retaining 45% of the shares. Despite the failure in the US market, the company began to actively develop in China, Russia, Latin America, and the Czech Republic. This allowed it to achieve significant successes, as evidenced by annual sales of 2.2 million cars.

1999 was marked by the acquisition of Dacia (Romanian automaker) and a stake in Nissan. Moreover, for the latter, this was a good help that saved the Japanese company from bankruptcy. Also during this period, a stake (70%) in Samsung Motors was acquired.

In 2008, Renault acquired 25% of "AvtoVAZ", which allowed it to confidently establish itself in the Russian sector. Later, this percentage was increased to 67.
