The Renault Safrane was produced from 1992 to 2000. It is a fairly large 5-door hatchback in the E segment. Throughout its production period, it was the most expensive and equipped car of the French brand.

Creation History

The car, presented in 1992, replaced the R25 model on the factory assembly line, which had a number of critical drawbacks for large sales, which they tried to eliminate when developing its successor. First of all, this is the insufficient strength of the body to torsion and low build quality. Another object of engineering endeavors was the reduction of noise and vibrations. As a result, the car turned out to be much heavier than its predecessor. The strengthened chassis and a large amount of noise and vibration insulation, depending on the version, added from 200 to 300 kg. Despite this, the car handled perfectly, offering a lot of space and comfort in the cabin. However, sales did not turn out to be as good as planned. To a large extent, this was due to the extremely unsuccessful design of the cable-driven mechanical transmission, first applied in Renault. In the European market, this became a rather serious problem, since 80% of the modifications sold on it were on "mechanics".

Engine Range

At the time of launch into serial production, the car was equipped with a wide range of engines, consisting of 5 gasoline and 1 diesel engine. The "base" was an in-line gasoline "four", with a volume of 2.2 liters, with a power of 106 hp. The most dynamic modifications were equipped with a more suitable V6 with a volume of 3 liters for a heavy car, developing 167 hp. The diesel part was represented by a 2.1-liter power unit of its own design and a 2.5-liter unit from Iveco-Sofim, initially developed for commercial equipment.

Restyled Version

In the summer of 1996, the manufacturer introduced an updated version of the car. Significant changes appeared in the design of the front and rear, which "updated" the model. In addition, the list of equipment was expanded, both in the standard and additional configuration. In technical terms, the key innovation was the complete update of the engine range. The gasoline part was represented by 4- and 5-cylinder engines developed by Volvo, which became one of the results of a brief agreement between Renault and the Swedish brand, concluded in the early 1990s. This led to a number of minor but significant changes affecting both the trim and the design of the power units and the AisinWarner automatic transmission. As a result, confusion often arose when searching for spare parts, which, although produced by Volvo, were only available for ordering through the Renault catalog. In this regard, a pleasant exception was the V-shaped "six" with a volume of 3 liters and a power of 190 hp, created in collaboration with PSA. A truly own development was the 4-cylinder turbo diesel G8T with a volume of 2.2 liters, developing 113 hp. Despite all this, the sales of the modernized version turned out to be 60% lower than those of its predecessor. Over 8 years of serial production, just over 300,000 copies were produced.
