The miniature hatchback Renault Clio, named in honor of music history, became a replacement for the existing Renault 5 model. The latter had technically become outdated, and the French manufacturer decided to update it. Notably, the "five" was produced in parallel with the Clio for another five years.

Start

The first generation started in 1990 in France, and it took another year for it to reach European consumers from other countries. The manufacturer released two modifications with three and five doors in the hatchback body at once. They were equipped with 1.2 and 1.4 liter gasoline engines, as well as 1.7 and 1.9 diesel engines.

In 1994, the first facelift was carried out, which introduced a new radiator grille, more rounded headlights and bumpers. Some changes were also made to the interior, improving its ergonomic properties.

In 1996, another restyling took place, which not only affected the exterior, giving the body more rounded features, but also affected the power units. In particular, the 1.2 liter gasoline engine was replaced by a 1.15 liter engine, which was more economical.

The generation turned out to be quite successful, as evidenced by its entry into the top 10 in sales in the European region, as well as the total number of copies of around 4 million.

Model development

The next generation, number 2, was released in 1998. The car received numerous updates that affected its operational characteristics. Some of its parts were made from materials not typical for this industry. For example, an aluminum hood, plastic wings. All this was done to reduce the weight of the vehicle and increase its resistance to aggressive influences. Initially, the engine range remained unchanged, only after a few years it was replaced with more advanced modifications, as well as supplemented with 2.0 and 3.0 liter gasoline engines (concerning special sports versions). The car stayed on the assembly line for a long time. Therefore, the number of its copies exceeded 7 million. Note that even after the start of the new generation, the car continued to be produced for the markets of South America, only with minor changes and low-volume engines of 1.0 and 1.1 liters.

Generation 3

In 2005, the production of "Clio 3" began, which was built on a platform developed jointly with Nissan. It was characterized by versatility, which allowed the release of several different models on it. The car became a little heavier and larger. Along with the 3 and 5-door hatchback, a wagon was also released. Among the power units, a two-liter gasoline engine can be distinguished, which allowed the car to accelerate to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. In addition, a wide range of standard low-volume engines was installed.

Generation 4

The next global update was carried out in 2012. The car received a new interior and exterior, acquiring sporty notes. Its power units became less voluminous: from 0.9 to 1.5 liters. This had a positive effect on fuel economy. At the same time, the safety was completely redesigned, and the model received a number of auxiliary systems. In 2016, the manufacturer carried out another restyling, which brought some changes to the exterior.

Popularity in Russia
