The "Chevrolet Niva" is an off-road vehicle with permanent four-wheel drive, a two-stage transfer case, and an inter-axle locking differential. It was produced from 1998 to 2002 by a joint venture between GM and AvtoVAZ.

Creation History

In the early 1980s, VAZ began developing the second generation of the "Niva", a popular compact SUV with a bearing body. The work continued until the 1990s, while the exterior of the prototype models constantly changed. The final design option was adopted by 1993, and over the next few years, the prototypes became operational, gaining a technical part. For a number of reasons, VAZ was unable to launch the production of a modern engine, which at that time was equipped with the "Kalina" model. As a result, the SUV received an engine from a car of the previous generation, which did not meet the current requirements, becoming the main reason for the poor traction and dynamic performance. Nevertheless, the first production Chevrolet Niva models, which at that time had the index 2123, were released in 2001, for which the capacities of the experimental-industrial production were used. In the following, 2002, an agreement was signed on the creation of a joint venture with General Motors. At the same time, the license for the production of VAZ-2123 and the rights to the Niva model name were transferred to the new joint venture.

First Series

The serial production of the first-series car was established in 2002. The SUV was available in two trim levels - L and GLS. The more expensive GLS offered a steering wheel with artificial leather trim, alloy wheels, an aluminum spare wheel mount, thermal-insulated tinted glass, fog lights, and heated front seats. In addition, LC and GLC trim levels were offered, differing only in the presence of a air conditioner. In the process of preparing the car for serial production, a number of critical shortcomings were discovered, only part of which was possible to eliminate before its start. First of all, this is the power steering, which was distinguished by low quality, both in production and in work. It was replaced by a "hydraulics" from ZF and Bosch, thanks to which the "Steering Systems" plant appeared in Tolyatti. GM's strategy implied a gradual replacement of such nodes, taking into account the previously acquired experience with the launch of the Blazer SUV production. In particular, during several years of production of the "Niva", the "January" fuel injection system was replaced with an analogue from Bosch. VDO became the supplier of the instrument cluster. In addition, changes were required in the seat frame, body ventilation system, rearview mirror adjustment, as well as an expanded list of options, which included a air conditioner, central locking, and alarm system.

Second Series

In fact, the continuous process of modernization of the Chevrolet Niva led to the appearance of a restyled version of the car, presented in 2009. Its development was carried out by the Italian Stile Bertone. The car received new headlight optics with lenses, an all-around plastic off-road trim, as well as a new ceiling in the salon. In technical terms, it has not changed so much. There were cardan shafts with a Shruce joint, updated bearings and seals of the transfer case.
