Tires on Chevrolet Lumina (Шевроле)

The Chevrolet Lumina was produced from 1989 to 2001 and was conceived as a versatile family model of medium size. The name suggested the idea of "light" and understandable simplicity: the car was created as a calm, practical vehicle, designed for long-term operation, regular city and highway trips, as well as minimal maintenance costs. In the American market, the Lumina became one of those cars that absorbed the typical spirit of its time — a significant area of glazing, soft suspension, and quite rich equipment, even if it was a basic package.

First Generation

Appearing in 1989, the Lumina almost immediately became a symbol of the new wave of front-wheel drive sedans from GM. The car used the W-body platform, where the manufacturer bet on a reinforced subframe, a rigid front suspension frame, and improved vibration isolation of the longitudinal beams. The suspension was independent at the front and semi-dependent at the rear, but with settings focused on comfort during long trips. The engines ranged from the base 2.5 to the more powerful 3.1 and 3.4 liters. Moreover, the more dynamic versions had a high-performance cooling system. As is typical for an American car, a significant portion of the produced copies were offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

The interior of the first-generation car is a dense velour, wide seats, and a characteristic panel with protruding control blocks. The plastic was not of the highest quality, but it was durable, and the layout was maximally understandable: large keys, large climate control knobs, and an easily readable instrument panel. The equipment often included air conditioning, an audio system, airbags, and electric adjustments, which made the model quite attractive to most potential buyers.

Second Generation

In 1995, the second iteration of the car debuted. Compared to its predecessor, it stood out with a more rounded body and its structure, where most of the power elements were made of high-strength steel. The front struts received additional stiffening ribs, which not only improved passive safety but also reduced vibrations and wandering of the car at high speeds. The suspension received new shock absorbers with settings that reduced "bouncing" on uneven roads. The engine range differed with a modernized version of the 3.1-liter V6 with an improved intake system and new injectors, as well as the appearance of a new 3.8-liter engine of the 3800 series, which subsequently became one of the most reliable power units in GM's "arsenal".

The interior offered higher-quality finishing materials, a modern instrument panel, improved noise insulation of the doors and engine compartment. Additionally, all seats received different padding. Top versions offered heated front seats, climate control, and a high-quality audio system.

In 1998, the car was waiting for another modernization, which was largely due to the need to meet the changed safety standards by that time. In particular, the power structure of the body was reworked, especially in the front part. Moreover, new engine mounts significantly reduced the level of vibration.

Other settings of the automatic transmission provided more understandable logic of switching.

Inside, almost nothing changed, but minor improvements were added: better panel lighting, modernized climate control units, and a wider selection of fabric and velour options. As a result, the final version turned out to be calm, reliable, and understandable — just as this car was conceived.
