The Subaru Chiffon Custom debuted in the Japanese brand's lineup in 2016. The car is one of the OEM versions of the Daihatsu Tanto "kei car".

First Generation

The car, presented in 2016, was one of two variants of the Daihatsu Tanto model of the third iteration of 2013. It differed from the "standard" only in the design of the front part, made in a more aggressive style with an increased amount of chrome on the radiator grille. The key feature of this model was the absence of a central pillar on the left side, which creates a huge door opening, allowing you to put almost any oversized item in the cabin. Most versions were equipped with an in-line "atmospheric" gasoline engine with a volume of 660 "cubes" and a power of 52 hp. An alternative to it was the same power unit, but with a turbocharger, developing a maximum allowed 64 hp. Both options worked in "pair" with a variator and could be combined with a drive, both on the front and on all axes. In the latter case, instead of a semi-dependent beam at the rear, a De Dion-type suspension appeared.

Second Generation

The car of the next iteration appeared just three years later. This was due to the change of generation of the original Daihatsu Tanto model. The differences again boiled down to the use of logos and nameplates on the body and in the cabin. At the same time, the platform was changed to a modular DNGA, one of the variations of TNGA developed by Toyota. This allowed to increase the distance between the axles by a symbolic 5 mm, and quite significantly increase the rigidity of the body and bending and torsion, while reducing the weight by 40 kilograms at the same time. The main "chip" of the model was preserved - the central pillar on the left side is still missing, which, in combination with the "wonderful" doors, forms a huge opening. The functions of this element are performed by the reinforced edges of the front swing and sliding rear doors. In addition to the new platform, the car received a modified engine. This is still an in-line "triple" with a volume of 660 "cubes", but with a slightly increased torque and reduced fuel consumption. In "pair" with the power unit, a new D-CVT variator from Toyota works, which, in addition to the belt mechanism and hydraulic transformer, has a planetary gear that automatically activates when the speed reaches 60 km/h, reducing the crankshaft speed and reducing noise and fuel consumption.

It is likely that the only difference between the Subaru version and the original is the equipment. In particular, a larger number of body colors is offered than the "original".
