The Volvo 240 is a line of mid-size passenger cars positioned by the Swedish manufacturer as "premium". The model proved to be iconic for the brand, staying on the assembly line for almost three dozen years.Initial Version
The car debuted in the fall of 1974, being available in six trim levels — sedans with 2 and 4 doors, a 5-door station wagon, as well as a 2-door coupe. The base models were technically and visually close enough to the predecessors with indices 140 and 164. The key difference from them was the use of safety solutions tested in the Volvo VESC prototype, shown in 1972. The car was notable for the presence of deformable zones in the front and rear, which reduced the level of impact on the cabin and its passengers. Another important difference was the engines — the base versions received scaled-up modernized gasoline "fours" from the predecessors, and the top ones with the index 260 — V-shaped "sixes". Depending on the trim level, the power units worked in pair with 4- and 5-speed manual transmissions, or with a 3-range "automatic".In terms of chassis, the car was notable for the presence of a front suspension with "MacPherson" struts. This allowed to increase the space inside the engine compartment. At the rear, a suspension from the previous 140th series was used, in a modified version. Another difference from it was the worm steering, and a hydraulic amplifier was part of the standard equipment of the top versions of the 200th series and coupe.
The use of deformation zones largely determined the design of the car, especially its front part, which closely resembled the VESC concept car, distinguishing this model from the 140th and 160th series. Inside, it differed by the front console, also borrowed from the predecessors, but with lattice deflectors of ventilation and square clocks on the front console.
Modified Versions
After just a few years of production, the car underwent changes. In particular, versions for the North American market received the first in the history of the Swedish brand gasoline engine V6, as well as an automatic transmission with an "overdrive" function. The 4-cylinder power unit was modernized, becoming slightly more powerful. On the wave of popularity of this model, a 7-seat limousine with an increased wheelbase of 3430 mm appeared in the lineup, created by the Bertone body shop, presented in 1976.In 1978, sales of cars with a modified radiator grille, chrome decor, and rearview mirrors painted in black began. In addition, a new painting technology was used, as well as other paint and varnish materials, which made it possible to solve significant problems with corrosion in cars of the first years of production. At the end of the same year, a diesel engine appeared in the engine range — a 6-cylinder power unit developed by Volkswagen. These versions were initially intended for the North American market, where they enjoyed popularity for several years due to the quiet and smooth operation of the engine.
In 1979, the car continued to change, especially in its external appearance. The key innovation was the appearance of square headlights of the basic versions and rectangular ones, starting from the "middle" trim levels. The car was equipped with 14- and 15-inch wheels as standard. Such products are constantly present in the assortment of the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
