Daihatsu Motor — a Japanese automobile manufacturer, one of the oldest in Japan and one of the few oldest companies in the country that produces internal combustion engines. History

The company was established on March 1, 1951, as a result of a major restructuring of the Japanese company Hatsudoki Seizo Co. Ltd, founded in 1907 and engaged in the development and production of gasoline engines for small stationary power plants. The decision to focus on the production of cars was due to the arrival of Ford and General Motors in the country, which opened car assembly plants in the 1920s. Until the 1960s, the company specialized in the production of three-wheeled commercial vehicles, and then switched to the kei car segment, but unfortunately, it did not achieve significant success. This led to the loss of independence in 1967, when Toyota became the holder of a blocking stake in the company, which in 1999 became the majority shareholder of Daihatsu. Despite belonging to one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers, this brand has not been able to "take root" anywhere outside of Japan. In 2013, sales were discontinued in Europe. At that time, there were about 220,000 vehicles of this brand on European roads.

In 2016, after Toyota acquired all of Daihatsu's shares, it was decided to focus on the market for small-displacement vehicles, using Toyota's dealership network. Despite this, the brand is currently in a precarious position. In April 2023, the company's management was forced to admit that the results of the side impact tests of the cars had been falsified. The scandal continued in December of the same year, when it was revealed that there had been manipulations during the crash tests, starting from 1989. These revelations forced the Japanese government to restrict the supply of Daihatsu products to the domestic market, as a result of which their production was stopped.
