The Lada automobile brand is owned by the Russian company AvtoVAZ. From January 2021 to May 2022, it, along with the Romanian Dacia, was part of a single division of the French Renault. This manufacturer controlled the brand since 2016. However, in 2022, the package of shares of AvtoVAZ was bought out by the Russian government.

History

The Lada automobile brand was first introduced in 1970, simultaneously with the release of the brand's debut model - VAZ-2101, the famous "penny". It was the result of cooperation with the Italian Fiat, which began in 1965, and represented a more robust version of the Fiat-124 sedan. The Soviet version differed from it with steel panels and body power elements of increased thickness, more powerful drum brakes, front and rear suspension with an increased range of motion, an upgraded transmission, and door handles sunk into the doors. The first copies were sold as "Zhiguli", but when the cars began to be exported, this name turned out to be inappropriate, since when pronounced by non-native speakers of the Russian language, it strongly resembled the word "gigolo". As a result, in 1973, export cars had a badge with the inscription Lada on the nameplate.

In the post-Soviet period, the automobile brand experienced significant difficulties, due to which the release of new models was constantly postponed. In particular, the popular "tens" VAZ-2110 were on the assembly line in 1995, two years later than planned. This was added to the tightening of legislation in most European countries and strong competition from Asian brands, which largely contributed to the final decline of the brand.

Lada and Renault

In 2008, a new era began in the history of the brand. The French Renault acquired 25% of AvtoVAZ's shares for $1 billion. Three years later, the first model developed under the new partnership went into serial production. This was the Granta, a compact sedan, sales of which began in December 2011. In mid-July of the following year, another model was released, created using French technology - Lada Largus. In August 2012, the brand presented the XRAY concept, developed by the company's then chief designer Steve Mattin. All of these and subsequent models used the B/C platform developed by AvtoVAZ in conjunction with Renault. In 2016, the French automaker gained full control over its Russian partner and the Lada brand. In January 2021, it was announced that the brand would be restructured and merged with the Romanian Dacia into a single division. However, it was not completed due to the sale of the controlling stake to the state-owned company NAMI. The deal implied a priority buyback within 6 years.
