Start of production

The car became front-wheel drive, the range of its engines expanded (1.8, 2.0, 2.4 and 3.0 liters), the body acquired more smooth outlines, although it fully preserved its silhouette, as in the first generation.

The real breakthrough was the third generation, which appeared in a completely changed form. The car became larger, more spacious, its salon ergonomics improved. The suspension was completely redesigned, and the body began to be covered with a special composition that protects against corrosion. From this moment on, the car began to be supplied to many countries of the world, including Russia. As a rule, these were variants with a 2.0-liter engine on mechanics, or three-liter on automatic. Model development

The fourth generation was based on the universal Hyundai-KIA platform. Note that during the automotive crisis, the South Korean company was able to strengthen its position due to the successful sales of the Sonata, and therefore carried out the absorption of its competitor KIA. The joint developments of the two companies were implemented in the new Sonata. In 2002, a significant restyling was carried out, which changed the model - a wavy hood, rounded headlights, the presence of overhangs. All this made it even more attractive. The fifth generation was built on a new Y5 platform, which was also a joint development of Hyundai and KIA. The car was already positioned as a business class. But against the background of the popular Toyota Camry of that time, the car was unable to achieve successful sales. And even the carried-out restyling did not improve the situation. The seventh generation, which started in 2014, had a completely new platform as its basis. The body shape of the model acquired rapid outlines. In Russia, the model began to be assembled in 2017.
