The Hyundai i30 N has been part of the South Korean brand's production range since the summer of 2017. The car is a "charged" version of the hatchback with the same index, but differing from it with a larger gap in technical characteristics than most other brands, primarily European and Japanese. This is due to the manufacturer's desire to impose maximum tough competition with models such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R.

Initial version

The car presented in 2017 could be called a "hot hatch" without any discounts. Under its hood is a 2-liter turbocharged inline-four gasoline engine, which in the standard version produces 250 horsepower and 353 Nm. The manufacturer offers an even more powerful Performance version, with the same power unit producing 275 horsepower. As a result, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in 6.4 and 6.1 seconds, respectively. At the start of sales, the engine was combined only with a 6-speed manual transmission. Another important feature was the adaptive suspension with the ability to choose from five operating modes, one of which assumed the use of individual settings. The standard equipment included a launch control function, automatic downshift, and forced disconnection of the stability system. The Performance version adds an electronically controlled differential, increased-diameter brake mechanisms, an adjustable exhaust system, Pirelli P Zero tires, and 19-inch wheels to this set.

In its exterior design, the car stood out with aggressive bumpers with enlarged air intakes at the front and a diffuser at the rear, decorative red stripes, and massive exhaust pipes. In the cabin, there were even fewer changes compared to the standard hatchback - a steering wheel with buttons for switching the suspension modes and paddle shifters, front seats with pronounced lateral support.

Updated version

In the fall of 2020, an updated version of the car debuted. The changes were minor but affected both the exterior and technical components. The hatchback differed from its predecessor with new bumpers, LED headlights, and rear lights, as well as a wider radiator grille, which partly allowed to eliminate a fairly critical drawback of the previous model - frequent engine overheating due to the small volume of space under the hood. From the standard model, the car borrowed the current version of the multimedia system with a wide-format screen and an updated complex of driver assistance systems.

In terms of technology, the changes affected the transmission. In addition to the "mechanics," the car in the Performance version became available with an 8-speed robotic N DCT transmission, taken along with the steering wheel and "paddles" from the Veloster N hatchback. It is distinguished by the presence of an overboost mode, activated by a button on the steering wheel, after which the transmission works with maximum performance for 20 seconds. For track driving, there is an N Track Sense Shift mode. It, in turn, is activated automatically after the control unit recognizes the operation of the components in a corresponding manner based on sensor signals. Another difference from the predecessor was the appearance of 19-inch forged wheels, which allowed to reduce the car's weight and unsprung mass by 14.4 kg.
