The subcompact crossover Hyundai Kauai has been in production since the summer of 2017. The car is a line of modifications to the Kona model, designed for the domestic market of Portugal. This is due to the not quite successful choice of name for this car. It is named after the west coast of Hawaii, which, according to the manufacturer, reflects the lifestyle of potential buyers of the model. However, in Portugal, this word is pronounced similarly to cono, a local slang term for female genitalia. The South Korean company found an original way out of the situation by choosing Kauai, which translates from the Hawaiian language as "woman".

Main differences

In the model range, the crossover occupies an intermediate position between the even more compact Venue and the spacious Tucson. The car is built on the same platform as the Hyundai i30 and Kia Seltos of the current generation, sharing with them most of the technical components. First of all, this is the line of engines, starting with the new inline petrol "triple" with a volume of 1 liter of the Kappa II family. In turn, the most dynamic versions are equipped with a 2-liter petrol Theta II, well-known from most compact passenger car models and crossovers of the Hyundai/Kia concern. However, the most popular "Portuguese" modifications were diesel, which were equipped with a 1.6-liter engine. Until 2020, this was the U-engine, which developed 90 hp, and after that - a more modern "aluminum" power unit of the Smartstream family with a capacity of 136 hp. Due to objective reasons, this car cannot be called popular in our country, which cannot be said about the Kia Seltos, with which it has the closest technical connection.
