The Dodge Ram 2500 is a full-size pickup truck that has been in production since 1994. The model emerged as part of the second generation of the same-name light truck of the North American brand, taking an intermediate position between the 1500 and 3500 models.

Creation History

The development of the second generation of the full-size pickup truck began as early as 1986. Initially, the concept, called the Louisville Slugger, suggested the use of a progressive modular platform for that period, on the basis of which it was planned to create a large number of modifications. This project was closed in 1987 due to significant implementation costs. An alternative was the traditional frame construction for North American pickups. American Motors was in charge of development, and by 1990, they had presented their version, which was also rejected as it was considered a "rework of someone else's truck". However, plans for the new model's serial production were not revised, resulting in American Motors having to redo everything urgently. The design of the current pickup truck models of the main competitors served as a "reference point", which, in the opinion of Dodge designers, were too similar to sedans of North American brands. The light trucks Studebaker, released in the 1950s, were cited as an example, which had the correct "macho" appearance from the point of view of the main audience of the new model. If we consider that it was a pickup truck, it was logical to assume that all efforts in developing the design fell on the front part. The engine compartment was highlighted by large sizes and compact front fenders, as well as a massive chrome radiator grille. Even at the time of the premiere, such a design was considered extremely risky by the Dodge and Chrysler management, but ultimately, these concerns were unfounded. In 1994, i.e., in the first year of serial production, sales increased by more than 2.5 times compared to 1993. Over the next two years, they were able to increase it even more, from 230 to 410 thousand copies. A significant part of them was the 2500 modification.

Main Features

The appearance of the 2500 modification is due to the discontinuation of poorly selling pickups with a "one-and-a-half" cabin with a payload capacity of 1 ton, which offered a limited number of usage scenarios. The new model, presented in 1994, was created on the frame of the "light" 1500 modification and was also available only with a "one-and-a-half" cabin. However, inside, it had a passenger car salon with wide front seats separated by an armrest, a "glove" box with increased capacity, as well as an additional luggage compartment behind the rear sofa. In addition, high-quality finishing materials were used, and the list of equipment implied the presence of electric drives for rear-view mirrors and windshields, as well as an audio system. Another feature and difference from the previous model and the 1500 modification was the engine range. It consisted of inaccessible to them gasoline V8s with a volume of 5.2 and 5.9 liters. Depending on the configuration, the car could be equipped with two types of transmission - with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. In addition, modifications with semi-independent or independent rear suspension were offered.

Modernized Version

The development of the next generation car began simultaneously with the start of sales of the debut model in 1996 and continued for the next 5 years. Despite the complete preservation of the concept, this pickup truck had an extremely weak connection with its predecessor in technical terms. The car received a new frame, suspension, transmission, interior, and was made of sheet metal. In addition, a standard cabin with "passenger car" opening of all four doors appeared. Despite the massive transition to independent suspension, the 2500 modification retained both bridges, which was due to the developers' desire to maintain high reliability and durability of the car. Another fundamental difference from the predecessor was the appearance of a rack-and-pinion steering system, which was a unique offering in this segment at that time.

In 2010, the North American manufacturer once again subjected the pickup truck to modernization. The car received a new frame, a 4-door cabin, as well as improved Hemi family engines. In addition, the engine range included a Cummins diesel power unit - an in-line "six" with a volume of 6.7, developing 350 horsepower and 880 Nm. At the same time, even with such an engine, the pickup truck could be equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission. The manufacturer offered such modifications as "exclusive to their class", since at that time, both Ford and General Motors had stopped producing versions of their pickups with such a transmission. Among other features of the pickup truck, it is worth noting the use of a new storage system in the body walls - Rambox. In this form, the car existed until the entire line of Dodge light trucks was allocated to a separate brand called Ram in 2011. This pickup truck cannot be called popular in our country, nevertheless, it has a significant number of owners among our compatriots. A significant part of them buys tires and wheels for this model in the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
