The Citroen C4, prior to 2020, was a compact passenger car in the C segment, and thereafter, it became a subcompact crossover. It has been in production since September 2004, first by the PSA Group and then by the transnational corporation Stellantis. It is the successor to the Xsara model.

Initial Version

The model's debut took place in 2004. The car was an attempt by the French manufacturer to address the significant decline in sales. From the start of sales, it was available in two body types - a coupe and a 5-door hatchback. The exterior design of the 5-door version was distinguished by rounded shapes, resulting in an aerodynamic drag coefficient of only 0.28. In contrast, the coupe stood out with its more aggressive design, featuring sharp edges on the body panels. The interior drew attention with its fixed-hub steering wheel and a dashboard with digital and analog instruments. The chassis, characteristic of French brands, featured a front suspension on MacPherson struts and a rear suspension on torsion bars. This combination provided excellent ride smoothness, combined with good handling.

Second Generation

In 2010, the second iteration of the car was released. The new model was slightly larger than its predecessor and was available exclusively as a 5-door hatchback. Sales of the coupe were much lower than expected, and its presence meant internal competition with the DS3. Due to the conservatism of the target audience, the car was designed in a less eccentric style, but still contained a large number of sharp edges. The platform and chassis layout remained the same, with only the suspension settings changed. The braking system now came standard with ventilated discs "all around" and ABS and ESP systems. The engine range also remained largely unchanged and consisted of gasoline and diesel inline-four engines, previously installed on almost all passenger models of the PSA Group. One of the few innovations was the appearance of a new eHDi engine with a volume of 1.6 liters, equipped with a "start-stop" system.

Crossover Coupe

In the third generation, presented in the summer of 2020, the car became a crossover coupe. In addition to the exterior, the interior also changed significantly, not only in terms of layout but also in terms of trim materials, which became visually much more expensive. The car is built on the EMP1 platform, which is used in all compact passenger cars and crossovers produced by the brands that are part of Stellantis, from the DS3 Crossback to the Opel Corsa, using the same components. The engine range includes a 3-cylinder gasoline engine with a volume of 1.2 liters and a 4-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of 1.5 liters, available in several boost options. An electric version is also offered, with a planetary transmission and a traction electric motor with a power of 100 kW, capable of traveling up to 350 km on a single charge.
