Another feature that ensured exceptional fuel efficiency for this class was engines with reduced friction losses. The final result, which justified all these tricks, was the test results in 1989, on which the AX with a 1.4-liter diesel engine drove from Dover to Barcelona, using 45.5 liters of fuel, demonstrating a fuel consumption of only 2.7 liters per 100 kilometers.

In late 1991, the car underwent an update. Most of the changes affected the exterior and interior design. Outside, the car was distinguished by a changed rear door and transparent turn signal lenses at the front. Inside, it stood out with a new front console with a more conservative design.
