The GAC Fiat automobile brand belongs to a joint venture established by the Chinese GAC Group and the Stellantis corporation in March 2010. The partnership is carried out in equal shares and amounted to around $550 million for each of the alliance participants.

History

The agreement between Fiat and GAC to establish a joint venture was signed on July 6, 2009, in the presence of the President of China and the Prime Minister of Italy. In November of the same year, construction of an automobile plant began in China. The registration of the joint venture took place on March 9, 2010.

The assembly plant of the brand began its work in June 2012, and in January of the following year, it was announced that the partnership would be expanded by adding the Chrysler company to it, for which it was planned to build another automobile plant, where it was planned to produce Jeep products. In January 2015, GAC Fiat was renamed GAC Fiat Chrysler.

In January 2022, the transnational partner of the joint venture unexpectedly announced plans to increase its stake from the initial 50% to 75%. GAC Group released a statement saying that no official agreement on the reorganization of the joint venture had been signed. In July 2022, Stellantis announced the termination of cooperation with GAC Group and plans to close the assembly production in China and return to importing Fiat and Jeep cars to the Chinese market. Later, in the same year, GAC Fiat Chrysler announced its bankruptcy.

Model Range

At the initial stage of its existence, GAC Fiat was represented by the compact sedan Viaggo. Later, the company presented its version in the hatchback body Ottimo. After the opening of another assembly plant, the product line was expanded with Jeep models. In 2015, the Cherokee of Chinese production began to be sold, and at the end of the following year, the Renegade and Compass. In 2018, the Jeep Grand Commander appeared on the assembly lines of the plant in Changsha.
