The serial production of the VAZ XRAY began in 2015. The car became one of the most original projects of the Russian brand. It was an attempt to combine the practicality of a small crossover with the compactness of a B-class hatchback. Such a scheme is traditional for the segment of compact crossovers and provides a balance between comfort and simplicity of maintenance. The AvtoVAZ engineers significantly adapted the suspension settings to Russian roads: they increased the energy capacity of the shock absorbers and adjusted the geometry of the suspension. The ground clearance reaches approximately 195 mm - an indicator that is comparable to some compact crossovers. Thanks to this, the hatchback confidently copes with broken roads and dirt roads, while remaining a front-wheel drive car.

The engine range consisted of several gasoline "fours". The base was the "atmospheric" engine 1.6 liters with a capacity of 106 liters. s., familiar from other models of the Russian brand. In addition to it, the following were offered: 1.6 liters 110 liters. s. developed by the Renault-Nissan alliance and 1.8 liters of its own development VAZ with a capacity of 122 liters. s., installed on top versions.
Depending on the version, the power units were combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or a robotic AMT transmission.

Design and proprietary X-style

This car became one of the first serial models, where the new brand style was fully implemented. XRAY became one of the first serial models that fully implemented the new design language of the brand. The X-style concept is expressed in the graphics of the front of the body, the characteristic shape of the bumpers and the stampings on the doors. The body has relatively short overhangs and a high silhouette, which visually brings the model closer to the class of compact SUVs. With a length of about 4.16 meters, the car remains convenient for urban operation and parking. An interesting feature was the high hood line and massive front end, thanks to which the XRAY looks larger than it actually is. This is a technique rarely used in the budget segment.

Interior and equipment

The salon is oriented towards practicality. The architecture of the instrument panel is quite concise, however, the equipment can be quite rich for its class. Depending on the configuration, a multimedia system with a touch screen, rear view camera, heated windshield, climate control, light and rain sensors, cruise control, ESC stabilization system are available. In terms of equipment, the XRAY often surpasses many budget hatchbacks, including the same Renault Sandero. The interior is designed for practical users: the materials are simple, but wear-resistant.

Road behavior

In motion, the car demonstrates a character typical of European hatchbacks. The steering is quite informative, and the suspension well smooths out irregularities.
The high ground clearance and short base allow you to confidently move along bad roads, but on a high-speed highway, the car remains stable thanks to the wide track and body rigidity. Compared to full-fledged crossovers like the Renault Duster, this model is less focused on off-road, but for urban operation and suburban trips, its capabilities are more than enough.
