The compact sedan VAZ 2103 was produced from 1972 to 1984. The car was a modernized version of the debut model of the Soviet manufacturer with the index 2101, having a number of significant differences from it, both in appearance and in equipment.

Development

The model became one of the practical results of the agreement between the government of the USSR and the company Fiat, signed in 1966. It was developed jointly with the Fiat 124 Special, with the creation of the exterior design handled by specialists at the Italian brand's style center, and the technical component handled by the design department of the Volga Automobile Plant. The key difference from the Italian version of the sedan was the thickness of the body steel. The Soviet version weighed 1030 kilograms due to this reason, surpassing the 124 Special. Another difference was the engine, which received a modified layout, as well as drum brakes instead of disc brakes on the Italian version. The Soviet sedan had the ability to manually start the engine using a handle, provided in case the battery failed in strong frosts, along with an auxiliary fuel pump and improved sound insulation. According to the terms of the signed agreement, the car could not be sold on the same markets as the Fiat 124 Special, but after the production of this model was discontinued in 1974, the VAZ 2103 began to be exported to European countries, being presented there until the early 1980s.

Main Features

The exterior design of the sedan, although similar to the Italian "brother", had a number of significant differences. First of all, this is the front part with a negative inclination of the radiator grille and optics, due to which the lines of the front wings became noticeably sharper. The difference from the "penny" was the presence of a large number of decorative elements with chrome plating, including wheel caps and a radiator grille, where double headlights of the headlight appeared, which provided a more even distribution of the light flux across the entire width of the road. Due to the lack of technical possibility of production, they were produced by the company FER from the GDR for the first few years, and then in Czechoslovakia at the "Autopal" plant. The rear part of the sedan was distinguished by the presence of enlarged lanterns divided into two sections.

As for the salon, it was significantly redesigned and differed significantly from the interior of the "penny". First of all, due to the other front console, which had decorative elements imitating wood, a clock in the central part, an instrument panel with a tachometer and a daily mileage counter, a "Bylina" radio receiver. Additionally, there were new door cards and seats with combined upholstery of artificial leather and fabric. The standard equipment implied the use of new tires at that time, IY-170, which differed from the tires for VAZ-2101 with an increased tread width and more elastic sidewalls.
