History of creation

The existence of the SUV is owed to the modernization of its original version - the 3-door classic "Niva". This model was produced with minimal changes since the late 1970s. As part of a large-scale modernization, the manufacturer planned to expand the line by including an extended version. From 1992 to 1994, a model with the index 2129 was released, called the "Cedar". It was still a 3-door SUV with a 500 mm longer wheelbase and an additional side window on each side. At the same time, the rear sofa, like the original version, was located between the wheel arches, which is why the car was only formally a 5-seater. A much more significant drawback was the low body stiffness and the difficulty of getting into the rear sofa, which is why this model existed in serial production for just over a year. Nevertheless, work on creating a more spacious version based on the "Niva" continued, and the "Cedar" was chosen as a prototype.

The model with the index 2131 was significantly different from its predecessor in terms of design. First of all, a number of reinforcing elements were added - additional longitudinal beams and overlays in the most vibration-loaded areas of the body, which were the transmission and "transfer case". The key innovation in the exterior was another pair of doors, which solved the problem of getting into the rear sofa. It, in turn, was replaced with a similar part from the VAZ-2108. Another significant feature was the installation of a power steering hydraulic booster. The 5-door "Niva" received this component much earlier than the original model. Unfortunately, the manufacturer at that time did not have a large selection of engines, and for this reason, the power unit remained the same. All that was possible to do was to equip it with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This solution slightly increased the power and improved fuel efficiency. This car cannot be called popular, nevertheless, it has a fairly stable audience that values it for its spaciousness, sufficient off-road capability, and reliability.
