Mass production of the compact sedan VAZ-21099 was carried out from 1990 to 2004. For the Volga Automotive Plant, this car was the first model with this type of body, which had a front-wheel drive. It was part of the line of compact models "Sputnik", and its development began as early as 1980. The first prototype samples were built at the end of 1985, but due to the cessation of funding, the sedan went into serial production with a significant delay.
