One of them received the index VAZ-2101, becoming the flagship model of the line. The Fiat 124 was chosen as a prototype, which, as it turned out, was not very well adapted for operation in the Soviet Union. First of all, due to the low corrosion resistance of the body, insufficient ground clearance, rear disc brakes, as well as an engine with a lower crankshaft arrangement. The result was a large-scale modernization of the 124th. The car received body panels of increased section, rear drum brakes, a reinforced front suspension and a rear axle with five reactive struts, a different clutch and synchronizers in the gearbox.

The initial version of the car was distinguished by the presence of a large number of foreign components. In particular, windshield wipers were produced by Magneti Marelli. Over several years, a transition to domestic components took place. The most massive series was called "zero eleventh", according to the extended model index. It differed from the initial version with a radiator grille with a larger number of rods, a front body panel with rectangular openings for better engine cooling. The bumpers lost their "fangs", vertical protrusions, which were replaced with rubber moldings along the entire perimeter of the part, and the turn signals became flat, receiving orange light diffusers. The salon was distinguished by other front seats with more pronounced lateral support, which were taken from the "luxury" 2103, differing from them with dermatin upholstery. Another difference in the interior was the inserts imitating natural wood on the front console. In technical terms, this version was distinguished by an engine - an in-line "four" with a volume of 1.3 liters, developing 69 horsepower.
