VAZ 2121 Niva is a compact off-road vehicle with a bearing body and permanent all-wheel drive. It has been produced since 1977 and is considered the founder of the class of compact crossovers, which was also aimed at by the creators of another legend in this segment - Suzuki Vitara.

History of creation

The development of the car began in the late 60s and early 70s, when there was an understanding of the need for a car with increased passability and a level of comfort of passenger cars created in cooperation with FIAT and recently launched into mass production. In April 1971, the first technical council was held, at which the layout of the prospective model was chosen. Its development was significantly accelerated due to the borrowing of components from already produced "Zhiguli", in particular from the VAZ-2106 sedan, which "shared" the gearbox, engine, rear lights and salon. As a result, the first prototype was built in 1972, and a year later, full preparation for mass production began. The first pre-production samples appeared in 1974, and their second batch - in March 1976. Throughout this time, endless road tests were carried out, in which this off-road vehicle was compared with UAZ-469, Land Rover and Range Rover, both on paved roads and off-road. Mass production of VAZ-2121 began in the spring of 1977. Very quickly, the planned production volumes of 25,000 units per year had to be revised and increased to 70,000 units due to huge demand, both in the domestic and export markets.

First modernization

By the turn of the 80s and 90s, the car had significantly aged and the first attempt was made to modernize it. In essence, it was a restyling that affected the design of the rear of the off-road vehicle and its salon. The engine from VAZ-2106 was replaced with its more modern version with a volume of 1.7 liters and a power of 78 hp with a "Soleks" carburetor and a non-contact ignition system. It was aggregated with a 5-speed manual gearbox and bridge reducers with a changed gear ratio. These measures made it possible to significantly reduce fuel consumption. At the same time as the restyled version, the plant was working on the development of a 5-door version of the "Niva", which in 1995 became a separate model.

In 2009, a second cycle of modernization of the car was carried out, which after its completion received the index 21214. The principal difference from the predecessor was the suspension, the components of which were "borrowed" from Chevrolet Niva. In addition, a new clutch and a more powerful braking system appeared. In 2014, another version of the car appeared - Urban. It differed from the original version by the presence of sound insulation, plastic bumpers, a modified radiator grille, a steering wheel of a smaller diameter, an air conditioning system, electric mirrors and window lifts. The production of the off-road vehicle of this modification continued until 2020, when it again underwent restyling, changing its name to Lada 4x4 FL. Over the decades, several hundred thousand units of this off-road vehicle have been produced, and many of them are still actively used on our roads.
