The car, presented in 1997, was created on the basis of the sedan with the index 21099, essentially being its deep modernization and becoming the first model of the second series of the Samara line. The fundamental difference from its predecessor is the design. The car received a new trunk lid with a spoiler and an additional stop signal, as well as rear lights combined by a plastic insert. Additionally, the bumpers were changed, painted in the body color. The first few years of mass production, the car used the interior from the previous model. This was largely due to its assembly in the experimental-industrial production. In 2001, the car was transferred to the factory conveyor, receiving a new interior, which was subsequently installed in other models of the Samara family of the second series. The engine range consisted of two engines - 1.5 and 1.6 liter inline-four petrol engines. Initially, they were equipped with carburetors, and from 2001 - with electronic fuel injection, while preserving the archaic design with 8 valves at that time. A more modern engine with 4 valves per cylinder, the compact sedan received at the end of its serial production - in the spring of 2010. The power unit with a power of 90 horsepower allowed the compact and lightweight sedan to accelerate to 185 km/h, making it one of the fastest cars in the Volga Automobile Plant model range.
