VAZ Kalina is a line of compact passenger cars belonging to the B segment. The model was produced from 2004 to 2018 and became the last one to use the "Gamma" platform of its own design.

Development

This car was created in the first half of the 1990s, simultaneously with the development of the next generation of compact SUV "Niva". It is for this reason that the first prototype "Kalina" had a similar appearance to it. They were presented in 1999, being released using "bypass" technologies, receiving, in particular, double headlights from "Oka". For such an appearance, the car got the nickname "laughing dolphin", after which its design, especially in the front part, was revised, differing in the new version with more stringent forms. Another feature was the use of computer modeling technologies in the development, which made it possible to most effectively use the space inside the car body. In particular, this model differs from its predecessors with the 2110 index by much more space above the heads of passengers.

Initial version

Serial production of the car began in the fall of 2004. It represented a compact sedan of a classical layout for that time with a front engine and front-wheel drive. A motor with the index 11183 of its own design was used as a power unit. In 2006, the line was supplemented with a hatchback modification, and in the next one - versions with a 16-valve engine with a volume of 1.4 liters. In early 2007, a station wagon with the index 1117 appeared, and the cars with other body types were equipped with an upgraded engine 11194.

Modernized version

In August 2012, the manufacturer presented a second-generation car. Externally, despite significant changes, it was similar to its predecessor, but technically it was one of the variants of the compact "Granta" model, borrowing from it the power structure of the body, engines, transmission, steering, as well as suspension with negative camber of the wheels. For the same reason, the sedan was excluded from the line, since a car with such a body was offered by "Granta", as a result of which the line consisted of a hatchback and a station wagon. The engine range consisted of four engines, the "base" of which was the power unit from the previous model - an 8-valve "four" with the index 11183 with a power of 82 horsepower. New was the engine with the index 21127, a modernized version of the previously existing engine with an increased working volume of up to 1.6 liters, which was installed on the popular "twelfth". The key difference was the function of regulating the intake, which made it possible to slightly increase power and traction, the speed of response to an increase in fuel supply. At the same time, the previous version of this engine was still installed in this "Kalina", since only it could be aggregated with a 4-speed automatic transmission from Jatco. Other modifications were equipped with a 5-speed "mechanics", later in a modernized version, where the lever gearshift was replaced with a cable. Starting from the first generation, the car was popular, remaining so today, despite the absence of it in serial production.
