Leland from Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company, who conducted an assessment of the company's remaining production assets, which were then being prepared for sale. Instead, Leland convinced the pair of investors to continue producing cars, offering their own development - a proven single-cylinder engine - as a power unit. As a result, on August 22, 1902, the Cadillac Automobile Company was registered at the Detroit plant, named after the French explorer Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac, who founded the fur trading post of Detroit in 1701.
