History of creation

The car appeared as a result of the restructuring of the SUV model range, the need for which arose due to the start of production of the new Jeep Cherokee with the XJ index, which was also offered as a Wagoneer. However, the continued high demand for the previous generation SUV with the SJ index in the Limited configuration prompted the company's management to continue its production, but with a different name - Grand Wagoneer. In 1984, the car was considered the "gold standard of the SUV market", despite the design, which with minor changes had been used since 1962, featuring characteristic wooden panels on the vertical surfaces of the body.

Initial versions

The car that appeared in 1984 was at the junction of two classes - pickups and 5-door passenger vans. From the first, it received a frame, transmission, and engine, and from the latter - a body and salon, rich equipment, partially suspension layout, and steering. A 5.9-liter petrol "atmospheric" V8 was used as the power unit, which was combined with a 3-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive with a mechanically connectable front axle. This same set became one of the reasons for the discontinuation of this version's production in 1993 and its replacement with a special version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the ZJ index, which received the name of the previous model. Unlike the standard version, it was distinguished not only by extremely extensive standard equipment, including "signature" exterior and interior trim, but also by the engine. This was an uncompromising 5.2-liter petrol V8 of the Magnum series. In this form, the car existed on the assembly line for only one year.

Second generation

The car's return to the North American brand's model range took place only in 2022. Despite the long absence, the concept of the predecessor was fully preserved. Technically, it still largely repeated the pickup. But now it was a modern Ram 1500, which, in particular, caused the car's significant dimensions, which were noticeably larger than those of its main competitor, the Chevrolet Tahoe. Another significant advantage was the equipment, the list of which was already extremely wide in the standard configuration. In technical terms, the car largely repeats the Ram 1500 pickup, from which, in particular, the engine was taken - this is an unavailable for the standard Wagoneer petrol "atmospheric" V8 with a volume of 6.4 liters of the Hemi series with a power of 477 hp. and a torque of 617 Nm. For the extended version of the car, the most productive version of the in-line "six" Hurricane with two turbines with a volume of 3 liters is available, which develops 517 hp. and 678 Nm. The power units are combined with an 8-speed "automatic" and the most functional version of the all-wheel drive system - this is Quadra-Trac of the second iteration with a transfer case. The standard equipment includes an electronically controlled pneumatic suspension, which automatically lowers the car when parking and increases the ground clearance off-road to 257 mm.
