The Mini Cooper is a line of compact cars produced in a distinctive retro style. It has been in production since 2001 by the German company BMW and is one of the most popular models of the brand.

History of Creation

The development of the car began in 1991 and was carried out simultaneously by the Rover Group and BMW. There were constant disagreements between the two teams regarding the concept and positioning. The British wanted to get an affordable compact model that would replace the Rover 100, while the Germans wanted a small car with pronounced sporty handling. After the British company came under the control of BMW in 1994, the second concept prevailed, which began to be implemented only after the re-sale of Rover in 2000. A year later, a full-size clay model was ready. During its presentation to the board of directors of the German company, it was discovered that it lacked an exhaust pipe. The chief designer, Frank Stephenson, found a solution by making a hole with a tin can from a beer can and leaving it there. The design seemed so successful to the board members that they advised him not to change anything, after which the distinctive exhaust pipe nozzle appeared on the production cars, located exactly in its center.

R50 Body

The car made its debut in the summer of 2001 as one of the modifications, distinguished by a more powerful engine of Brazilian production of the Tritec family, developed jointly by the North American divisions of Chrysler and BMW. In the most powerful version, this power unit was equipped with a turbocharger. As part of the 2004 facelift, the lineup was expanded with a convertible body. Additionally, there were minor changes to the exterior, the list of standard and optional equipment was expanded, and the mechanical transmission Rover R65 was replaced with a "mechanics" from Getrag. Alternatively, a stepless variator from ZF was offered, or in the case of the most powerful version, a classic 6-range "automatic" from Aisin. Another of its distinctive features was the location of the battery in the rear in the spare wheel niche, which was due to the cramped engine compartment and the increased dimensions of the turbocharged engine.

R56 Body

In 2006, the next-generation car was presented. Despite the fact that each body panel has been changed, its external appearance was easily recognizable. In turn, the use of a modified platform of the predecessor significantly increased the dimensions of the car, adding space not only in the cabin but also in the engine compartment. Thanks to this, the battery returned to its former place under the hood. There also appeared a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine of the Prince family, developed by the PSA concern. The more powerful version was equipped with an inline "four" N14 with two turbines, but without Valvetronic, which is due to the presence of a function for briefly increasing the boost pressure, which increases the torque by 20 Nm during sharp acceleration. This allowed reducing the acceleration time to "hundred" to 7.1 seconds. The suspension was changed accordingly, in which many parts were made of aluminum. In addition, as an additional option, a sports chassis with more rigid springs and shock absorbers was offered. At the same time, the car was already equipped with an electric power steering, which, along with the engine and transmission, had a "sport" mode, which was activated by pressing the corresponding button.

F55 Body

The car of the third generation was first shown in the fall of 2013. It was built on the newest modular platform UKL at that time, which was also used in the BMW 2 Series. The model turned out to be significantly larger than its predecessor, becoming 98 mm longer, 44 mm wider, and 7 mm higher. At the same time, 28 mm fell on the wheelbase, which, in combination, gave more space in the cabin and in the trunk, the volume of which reached 211 liters. Externally, the car became more rounded, which had a positive effect on aerodynamics. In turn, the instrument cluster was updated in the cabin, and an 8.8-inch display of the multimedia system with navigation appeared on the console. The engine range consisted of six new engines - four petrol and two diesel. Moreover, in the "base" version, a power unit with 3 cylinders was used for the first time. All engines were developed by BMW and worked in pair with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

J01 Body

In the fall of 2023, the car of the fourth generation debuted. It was developed by a joint venture between BMW and the Chinese Great Wall and is produced at the latter's plant. Another innovation was the transition to electric installations with a capacity of 181 and 215 horsepower, which are powered by a battery with a capacity of 40.7 and 54.2 kWh, respectively. In February 2024, the brand presented a modification with a traditional internal combustion engine, which was created on the platform of the predecessor, but has a design from the "electric" version.
