Creation History

The car was developed from 1995 to 2001 by engineers from Rover Group in England and BMW in Germany. Both teams constantly conflicted with each other, as the British created a compact urban economy class, and the Germans adhered to a different concept. In their opinion, this should be a small sports car with corresponding dynamics and handling. Ultimately, the "German" approach was chosen. In 1999, BMW gained full control over the project, having sold Rover Group by that time, while retaining the rights to the British brand. Already in 2000, a clay model of the new Mini was ready. The design, developed under the guidance of Frank Stephenson, turned out to be so good that the car was launched into mass production with minimal changes.

Initial Version

The car debuted in the summer of 2001. It still represented a very compact hatchback, only 20% larger than the original Mini of 1959. In addition, the conceptual features of the predecessor were preserved, primarily the wheels shifted to the corners of the body. And, of course, the car, made in a retro style, resembled the original Mini, repeating such characteristic features as contrasting colors of the roof and body, stripes on the hood, additional "rally" headlights, black edging of the wheel arches and sills.

Another feature of the model was the absence of a BMW engine under the hood. The engine range at the start of sales was represented by Tritec power units with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, developed by the joint venture Chrysler and Rover Group, which assembled them in Brazil. In 2000, BMW, having sold the remains of Rover, retained a share in this enterprise. Subsequently, the German company created a new joint production with the French PSA, developing Prince family engines, which were used in subsequent generations of Mini. Another "motor collaboration" was made with the Japanese Toyota, as a result of which the car received a 1.4-liter 1ND-TV diesel engine.

Second and Third Generation

In 2006, the British brand presented a car of the next generation. It retained the styling of its predecessor, but at the same time became much more efficient in terms of aerodynamics, mainly due to the new design of the front part. Another innovation was the appearance in the engine range of petrol in-line "fours" with turbocharging of the Prince family, developed together with PSA. The range of diesel power units has been significantly expanded. The "base" was a 1.6-liter DV6 engine, developed by Ford and Peugeot. More dynamic modifications were equipped with "fours" with turbines, with a volume of 1.6 and 2 liters N47 from BMW.

In the fall of 2013, the premiere of the car of the third generation took place. In essence, it was a deep modernization of the previous model. The novelty differed little from the external appearance, slightly increased in size, but retained the layout and chassis unchanged. Perhaps the only significant update was the appearance of immediately 6 new engines, primarily 3-cylinder petrol engines with turbocharging, with a volume of 1.2 and 1.5 liters, which became "basic" not only for Mini, but also for all compact models of BMW, starting from "one" and "two", sharing with the British compact platform and main chassis components.
