The debut for the full-size SUV GMC Suburban 1500 was in 1992. The vehicle was one of the variants of the Chevrolet Suburban of the eighth generation, adapted for the GMC brand dealership network. At that time, the General Motors concern was actively developing a line of "large" SUVs on the new GMT400 platform, which was the basis for this model. Despite the technical and visual kinship with Chevrolet SUVs, the GMC version had a number of distinctive features that gave it its own character. The manufacturer focused on a more rigorous design, different equipment options, and a different trim structure. As a result, the vehicle took an intermediate position between a utilitarian SUV and a comfortable family vehicle for long trips.Design Features
Technically, the vehicle almost completely repeated the Chevrolet Suburban of the eighth iteration, which received the GMT400 frame platform, borrowed from the pickups of the North American brand. The same ladder frame with increased stiffness was used here, designed for very high loads, much higher than a 5.5-meter SUV could provide. The suspension was also fully identical, being torsion in the front and with a non-split bridge on longitudinal leaf springs in the back. The braking system included disc mechanisms in the front and drum brakes in the back, and in later years of production, the SUV received an anti-lock braking system (ABS).
In technical terms, the SUV fully followed the American tradition of large atmospheric engines. The basis of the range consisted of gasoline V8 engines of the small-block family.
The base unit was a 5.7-liter engine, known under the Vortec index. This engine was distinguished by high torque at low revs, which was ideal for a heavy "frame". For separate markets, a 6.5-liter V8 diesel engine was offered, focused on high torque and economy during long trips. On early versions, the power unit was combined with a manual transmission, but then it was removed from the list of available equipment, as a result of which the vehicle was offered exclusively with a 4-speed "automatic". Depending on the version, the SUV could be equipped with a drive on either the rear axle or all four wheels with a "hard" connection of the front axle.
Salon Space and Equipment
The salon had a classic configuration with three rows of seats. Thanks to the significant wheelbase and body width, the vehicle provided space for eight or nine passengers. The internal design depended on the trim level. Basic versions had quite simple trim, while more expensive options received leather seat upholstery, a high-performance air conditioner, electric window and mirror lifts, an audio system with an extended set of speakers, and cruise control. Particular attention was paid to practicality. Large doors and a high ceiling made it easier to board, and the folding rear rows of seats allowed the SUV to be converted into a huge cargo compartment.
Differences from the "Original" Model
Despite the visual and technical kinship with the Chevrolet Suburban, the GMC version had a number of distinctive features. First of all, the exterior design differed. The vehicle received its own radiator grille and a different front part, executed in the corporate style of the brand. The second difference was the structure of the trim levels. The GMC brand was traditionally positioned a little higher in the concern's hierarchy, so the Suburban versions under this brand often had more rich standard equipment.
Finally, the vehicle was focused on an audience that used the SUV not only as a family vehicle but also as a work vehicle - for example, for towing trailers or long trips with a large payload.
For this vehicle, wheels with a landing diameter of 15 or 16 inches were standard, which provide an optimal balance between comfort and stability of a large SUV. Such parameters allow maintaining the correct geometry of the suspension and the reliability of the transmission. In the online store "Mosavtoshina", it is easy to select the appropriate variations thanks to a large selection of sizes that fully correspond to the factory characteristics.
