The compact hatchback Dacia Sandero Stepway debuted in the spring of 2009. The car was a European version of a similar model from Renault, developed by the Brazilian division of the French company, which was initially intended for the markets of South American countries.

First Generation

The car presented in 2009 differed from the South American version, first of all, by the engine range. The "base" engine was a 1.6-liter gasoline engine producing 90 horsepower. An alternative to it was a 1.5-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 70 horsepower. In all other respects, both cars were identical, differing from the standard Sandero by an increased ground clearance of 20 mm and a plastic body kit around the entire body.

Second Generation

The next-generation car was presented in the fall of 2018, along with the standard hatchback, which also changed generations. Technically, it repeated the predecessor, having an increased ground clearance due to the use of other springs and shock absorbers, as well as tires with a higher profile height. Externally, this version can be distinguished by black plastic overlays that cover the lower part of the body around its entire perimeter, as well as roof rails. Another feature of the car was the appearance of a modification with a variator. And this was the only option to get Sandero with such a transmission, since due to the limited space of the engine compartment, the variator was located in its lower part, significantly protruding beyond its limits. The "crossover" suspension of this model allowed to some extent to neutralize this feature, providing the same ground clearance as the standard version of the hatchback.

Third Generation

In 2020, the premiere of the third-generation hatchback took place. The car uses the modular CMF platform, which allowed to eliminate a number of technical limitations related to the use of modern mechanical components and electronic systems. The chassis layout remained the same. At the front, classic "MacPherson" struts are used, and at the rear, a semi-dependent beam, which provides a ground clearance depending on the load from 147 to 201 mm. The visual difference from the standard hatchback again was plastic overlays around the body, bumpers, and a grille, along with a more embossed hood, which was not available on the predecessor. The luggage rails are still present on the roof, but now they have a mechanism for transforming into crossbars with a payload of up to 80 kg.

The salon differs not only in the new design but also in a level of comfort unavailable to the predecessor. In particular, there is an adjustment of the steering wheel both in height and in reach. The lever of the mechanical gearbox has become shorter, and the central part of the front console is located at an angle, being turned towards the driver. The use of a new platform has made it possible to increase the distance between the two rows of seats by 42 mm. In addition, the list of options has become available folding tables with the possibility of adjusting their reach within 7 cm. Most versions still come with 15-inch wheels.
