The Vauxhall Astra is a compact car that belongs to the C segment. It has been produced since 1980, representing a right-hand drive version, first of the Kadett, and then of the same-name model from the German company Opel.

First Generation

The car's debut took place in 1979. It was a right-hand drive version of the Opel Kadett D. Initially, the British company worked on a restyled version of this car, planning to release a whole line of modifications, including a hatchback, wagon, and sedan. However, General Motors, which owned the brand at that time, preferred to limit itself to just a badge on the radiator grille and other trim materials. It is worth noting that along with Vauxhall, Opel was also present on the British market with the same models, which is why the English version of the Astra was offered only in a limited number of modifications, with various combinations of bodies and engines, most of which were not available in the German counterpart.

Second Generation

In the fall of 1984, the premiere of the second-generation car took place, which, like its predecessor, was a copy of the Opel Kadett, but already of the next generation. The updated body had much better aerodynamics, which positively affected fuel efficiency and acoustic comfort. The only "unique" version was the GTE Quicksilver modification, created in 1987 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the British brand, using an improved Opel 1.8-liter gasoline engine. In the same year, the GTE convertible was introduced, which was produced by Bertone and equipped with an electric roof and window lifts. It was equipped with 1.6- and 2-liter gasoline engines.

Third Generation

In 1993, the brand presented a model of the next generation, representing a modernized version of its predecessor, despite a radically updated exterior design. The first few years, the car was equipped with GM Family I/II engines, which already had electronic fuel injection and a catalytic converter in the standard configuration. The engine range was revised at the end of 1994, after the debut of new Opel-developed Ecotec engines. During the transition period, power units were assembled from components of two engines, since there were many parts from Family engines in the English warehouses. Another unique feature of the British Astra was the use of a suspension developed by Lotus, which was equipped with "charged" Sport and GSi versions, starting from 1995.

Fourth Generation

The car of the fourth generation, presented in 1998, got rid of a number of critical drawbacks of its predecessor. First of all, this concerns the smoothness of the ride and handling, which were significantly improved. This was largely due to the increased rigidity of the body, where high-strength steel was used more widely. Initially, the car was offered with an engine range, mainly composed of engines from the previous model. Over time, 8-valve power units disappeared from it, which were replaced by more advanced versions with 16 valves.

Fifth Generation

The first production cars of the next iteration appeared in early 2004. The first months of production, only the 5-door hatchback was available, to which the 3-door version was later added, which optionally featured a panoramic windshield. In addition, it had an expanded range of modifications, the most interesting of which was the VXR with a turbo engine producing 240 horsepower. It was also available for a limited time in a special Nurburgring version, distinguished by a white color with black checks on the roof and rear door. The next unique modification was a commercial vehicle based on the wagon, which differed by a strengthened suspension and the absence of side glazing behind the front doors. It is also worth noting the appearance in the lineup in 2006 of the TwinTop version, which technically represented the Opel Tigra, but with an external design stylistically similar to the rest of the cars in the lineup.

Sixth Generation

The premiere of the sixth-generation car took place during the period of depreciation of the pound sterling, which largely ensured high sales of this model. Another factor was the design, which was largely similar to the more expensive Insignia model. Technically, it was an Opel Astra J, but the "British" features were limited this time to only the equipment, which was significantly wider than that of the "original" German brand. This is especially true for the wagon, which was not only better equipped than its predecessor but also offered at a much lower price, which allowed it to become one of the best-selling cars in this segment in England.

Seventh and Eighth Generations

In the second half of 2015, the brand presented a car of the next generation. It became smaller than its predecessor, but due to more efficient use of internal space, it had a more spacious salon than its predecessor. Another advantage was a significant reduction in weight - from 120 to 200 kg, depending on the modification. A significant part of the savings was ensured by the body, in which ultra-high-strength steel was used. The next innovation was the chassis. The Watt's linkage mechanism at the back was preserved only for the most dynamic versions; in the standard configuration, the car was equipped with a torsion beam, which, on the one hand, provides a smoother ride, and on the other hand, has fewer parts, which allowed further weight reduction. The engine range was no less innovative, featuring new ecoFLEX engines with a volume of 1 to 1.6 liters, which are characterized by high specific power and the presence of a start/stop system. In addition, the 1.6-liter diesel engine was distinguished by an exceptionally low level of noise and vibration for power units of this type. In 2019, the engine lineup was supplemented with 3-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines with a volume of 1.2 to 1.5 liters.

The eighth-generation model, presented in the summer of 2021, although based on the new EMP2 platform, became an evolutionary development of its predecessor. In addition to a more aggressive design, the car differs by a slightly revised engine range, which includes engines from Peugeot and "hybrid" power units. Considering that for all the time of serial production, the car represented a "clone" of the Opel Astra, but with the steering wheel on the right side, it is not surprising that this model is extremely rare on our roads.
