The Company

The origins of Hyundai date back to 1947, when Chung Ju Yung founded Hyundai Engineering and Construction. In 1967, the firm was restructured and changed its name to Hyundai Motor, under which it exists today. The company's debut model, the Cortina, was released in 1968 and was the result of cooperation with Ford. The first car of its own design appeared in 1975. This was the Hyundai Pony, the development of which began a year earlier. In February 1974, George Turnbull, the former head of Austin Morris, and five leading engineers from the British BRM joined the company. The exterior of the Pony was created by Giorgetto Giugiaro from Italdesign. The transmission supplier for the car was Mitsubishi. The model turned out to be extremely successful. In 1976, it began to be exported, first to Ecuador, and by 1982 it had reached England, where almost 3,000 units of this car were sold in a year. In 1985, it was this model that allowed Hyundai to reach impressive production volumes - over 1 million cars.

The next milestone in the company's development was 1986, when the mid-size sedans Grandeur and Excel went into serial production. But these were cars with components from third-party manufacturers. The company began to use its own developments in 1988, starting with the mid-size model Sonanta. In the spring of 1990, the company reported annual production volumes of 4 million cars. A year later, it introduced the first patented internal combustion engine of the Alpha series, as well as a transmission of its own design, thus gaining technological independence after almost three decades.

Hyundai in Russia

The South Korean automotive giant entered Russia in 2007. In December of that year, an agreement was signed to build an assembly plant in the Kaminka industrial zone. The plant began operating in December 2010, and the Solaris model and its KIA "clone" - Rio were launched into serial production. Also at that time, the assembly of a number of other Hyundai brand cars was carried out at the plant in Taganrog - Accent, Sonata, Elantra XD, Santa Fe Classic crossover, and the Porter light truck. In October 2015, the company released its millionth car in Russia. In addition to assembly plants, the company organized the production of a number of components - instrument panels, air conditioners, ventilation systems, seats, and exhaust systems. In June 2020, the construction of an engine plant with a capacity of up to 240,000 engines per year began. At the same time, the level of localization was quite high and included a cylinder block, cylinder head, and crankshaft. In the same year, the company acquired GM's assembly plant in Shushary. At the end of 2023, the company announced the sale of the plant in St. Petersburg. The deal amount was 7 thousand rubles. The company estimated losses at $219 million. However, the agreement included an option for priority repurchase of assets.
