The Michelin X-Ice Snow winter tire is suitable for 85% of modern passenger cars. The model is offered in over 120 sizes for wheels with diameters from 14 to 22 inches. It is positioned by the manufacturer as a replacement for the X-ice Xi3, differing from it with a completely redesigned construction and new materials. This provides it with significant advantages over its predecessor and similar tires from leading global brands.
New tread design
The key external difference between this model and its predecessor is the design of the tread pattern. While retaining the V-shaped arrangement of elements, it is characterized by their smaller size, changed shape, and increased number. This has allowed for a significant improvement in directional stability and traction and braking properties on snowy surfaces. The increased capacity and arrangement of drainage grooves at a more acute angle enable the tire to effectively combat both aquaplaning and slushplaning.
Updated lamellae
Another significant innovation is the use of two types of lamellae. All slits have a "three-dimensional" profile of vertical lamellae, which allows them to maintain block stiffness, improving handling and stability of traction properties on asphalt cleared of snow and ice. Thanks to the ability to rigidly fix in an open position, the number of slits has been increased. At the same time, the variable thickness of the slits in the central part allows the tire to better grip the surface covered with a water film and ice.
The P-shaped lamellae located in the shoulder zones improve handling and traction properties on slippery surfaces when maneuvering. They are fully preserved even with strong wear of the tread part of the tread. This is due to the increased depth of the lamellae, which is a "trademark" feature of French brand tires, beneficially distinguishing it from the vast majority of similar tires from other manufacturers.
Improved compound
The 2nd iteration of the Flex-Ice rubber compound is used in the manufacture of the tread part of the tread. Compared to the previous compound, it is distinguished by the use of more modern polymers. They significantly improve the resistance of the tread to abrasive wear, elasticity at negative temperatures, and prevent tread destruction when overheated. Also, the presence of a porous structure of the compound should be noted. This solution allows for additional drying of the contact patch, improving traction on rolled snow and ice.
Key features of Michelin X-Ice Snow
- a completely redesigned tread pattern with a larger number of blocks and wide drainage grooves improves efficiency on snow and slush;
- several types of lamellae provide excellent traction properties on icy and snowy surfaces;
- the new version of the Flex-Ice rubber compound increases traction on slippery surfaces, prevents wear and destruction of the tread when overheated.
