The Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV winter tire is designed for crossovers and SUVs. It is recommended by the manufacturer for use on paved roads. It represents a modified version of the same-name "passenger" model, adapted for use in vehicles with a higher center of gravity and increased weight. For this purpose, the design of the carcass, sidewalls, and the composition of the rubber mixture have been changed.
Improved traction in difficult conditions
One of the significant innovations in the tread pattern is the changed design of the transverse drainage grooves. In the shoulder areas, they are increased, which allows water, its mixture with snow and road dirt to be diverted from the contact patch with much greater intensity. As a result, reliability in handling is ensured in difficult road conditions.
Updated "lamelization" technology
The tire tread, like the previous model, uses several types of lamellas. However, in each case, their design has been significantly changed. First of all, this is an increase in the depth of the lamella cuts. The P-shaped cuts have become much more rigidly fixed, which increases the resistance of the blocks to deformation and, as a consequence, improves the accuracy of handling and stability during maneuvering. In turn, the lamellas of variable thickness, having received a deeper cut, when opening, form increased edges. This has allowed to significantly strengthen the grip properties on rolled snow and ice, while maintaining most of its functionality even with strong wear of the tread.
Modified rubber compound
Compared to the tire of the previous generation, the rubber compound has been significantly changed. Its structure has special small cavities. As the tread wears out, additional irregularities form in them. They give the tire additional grip, especially on rolled snow and icy surfaces. The effectiveness of this solution can be judged by the significantly improved braking properties.
Key features of Michelin X-Ice Snow SUV
- increased width of drainage grooves in the shoulder areas increases resistance to aquaplaning and slushplaning;
- P-shaped lamellas increase the stiffness of the blocks during maneuvering, improving handling accuracy and braking properties;
- variable thickness cuts enhance grip properties on rolled snow and icy surfaces;
- increased depth of tread element cuts increases their effectiveness and allows to preserve most of their functionality with significant wear of the tread;
- rubber compound with a porous structure increases the tire's grip on very slippery smooth surfaces.
