Proton X90 — a full-size seven-seater crossover, which is a carefully adapted version for Southeast Asia of the Geely Haoyue (Okavango) model. It was introduced in 2023.Design: a tactful rethinking of the global platform
The crossover's appearance is a masterful example of localization. While maintaining the monolithic proportions and recognizable silhouette of the "donor" (length 4825 mm), Malaysian engineers made key changes to the signature style. The model received original headlights with a new design of daytime running lights, a radiator grille in a updated design, as well as a modified decor and emblems. The front bumper, however, was preserved, indicating a pragmatic approach to adaptation.
Interior and Space
After mirroring the layout for right-hand drive, the main changes were reduced to the installation of the Proton logo on the steering wheel and some adjustment of the trim materials. The focus of the cabin forms a 10-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia system.
The car is standardly offered in a three-row seating configuration, designed for seven passengers. In the top version, it transforms into a six-seater, receiving separate second-row seats with ventilation function, which is a key advantage for the hot climate of the region.
Technical "stuffing"
The choice of power unit for the Proton X90 was the result of a localization strategy. A more modern 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system is used here. This "turbo three", already mastered in production in Malaysia, produces 190 hp. and 300 Nm of torque, demonstrating excellent performance. The engine is paired with a 7-speed robotic automatic transmission (DCT) with wet clutches, which provides fast and smooth gear shifting. At the start of sales, the drive is exclusively front-wheel. The basis of comfort and stability is an independent multi-link rear axle suspension, similar to that used in the more expensive version of the Geely Haoyue L, which guarantees excellent smoothness and handling.
