The basis for creation was the fifth-generation Mitsubishi Eterna, however, the Malaysian version was significantly redesigned taking into account the requirements of the local market. But it retained the layout with a transverse front engine and independent suspension on both axles, with a "multi-link" system used at the rear. The main difference between the Malaysian sedan and the Japanese model was the chassis settings. Proton engineers softened the characteristics of the shock absorbers and springs to improve comfort on the uneven roads of Southeast Asian countries. This approach allowed for improved smoothness of the ride, although handling became slightly less sharp compared to the Eterna.

The engine range included Mitsubishi 4G series gasoline engines. The base model was the 2.0-liter 4G63 engine, while more powerful versions were equipped with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter variants with distributed injection. After a three-year break, the Malaysian brand returned the Perdana to the production lineup. The model, presented in 2013, was created on the basis of the Honda Accord and became part of the technological cooperation with Honda. Although the car was practically a complete copy of the Japanese sedan in terms of design, Proton made a number of changes. First of all, the front part of the body was redesigned: the bumpers, radiator grille, and lighting equipment were changed. This allowed the design to be brought closer to the brand's corporate style.

Under the hood, 2.0 and 2.4-liter gasoline engines were installed, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. These engines were distinguished by their high reliability and moderate fuel consumption, making the car attractive to government fleets.
